WBB Suffers First SoCon Loss At Elon

Kendall Schwantz had six points and six rebounds at Elon Saturday afternoon.
Box Score ELON, N.C.—The Samford women's basketball team suffered its first Southern Conference loss of the season in a 65-41 setback at Elon Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gym.
 
“I was disappointed in the fact that we turned the ball over 26 times,” Samford head coach Mike Morris said. “We're still in a learning process with people in different roles and with different responsibilities. We just have to get better from this.”
 
Samford was led in the game by senior guard Jazmine Martin with 11 points. Senior Hannah Dawson had seven points, while junior Kendall Schwantz had six points and six rebounds. Sophomore Taylor Reece also had six points for Samford.
 
For Elon, Kelsey Harris led the way with 15 points. Kelsey Evans had 12 points and nine rebounds, while Ali Ford added 11 points and six rebounds.
 
The game was tight early in the first half until, with Samford trailing, 11-9, Elon went on a 10-0 run to push its lead to 12 points at 21-9 with 7:20 to go in the first half after a basket by Ford.
 
Samford fought back to cut the lead to seven points at 26-19 with 2:55 to go in the half after a basket by Reece. Elon, however, closed the half with another 10-0 run to take a 36-19 lead into halftime.
 
Elon opened the second half with a 9-0 run to push its lead out to 26 points and 45-19 with 14:45 left after a layup by Shannen Cochraham. The Phoenix pushed their lead out to 32 points at 53-21 with 10:37 to go in the game.
 
Samford fought back to cut the lead to 22 points at 61-39 with 2:11 left in the contest following a layup by Christy Robinson. Samford, however, could get no closer as Elon came away with the 65-41.
 
As a team, Samford shot 34.9 percent overall and 16.7 percent from three-point range. Elon made 48.1 percent of its shots overall and 38.9 percent from beyond the arc.  
 
The loss was the fifth-straight for Samford, and the Bulldogs drop to 5-7 overall and 2-1 in Southern Conference play. Elon improves to 5-7 overall and 2-1 in league play.
 
Samford will return to action on Monday, when the Bulldogs play at UNC Greensboro. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. (CT) start from Greensboro, N.C.
