TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Samford senior men's tennis player Elliot Barnwell highlighted the opening day of competition at the 2013 USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships Thursday as the Bulldogs' native of Mancetter, United Kingdom was victorious in both singles and doubles play.

In the first rounds of action of the five-day tournament being held at the University of Alabama Tennis Complex, Samford's Barnwell defeated Nicholls State's Sam Meesen in his opener, 6-4, 7-6(7). With the straight-set victory, Barnwell advanced to Friday's third round of action where he'll face UAB's Rafael Rondino.

The Bulldogs' Barnwell teamed with true freshman Liam Sullivan in doubles play to defeat South Alabama's combination of Daniel Leitner and Tuki Jacobs, 8-5. On Friday, Samford's doubles duo will continue play with a key second-round matchup against Mississippi State's tandem of Florian Lakat and Tassilo Schmid.

The 2013 USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships consist of 81 players from 13 teams. The schools competing in the tournament are Samford, Alabama, Auburn, Louisiana-Lafayette, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, New Orleans (UNO), Nicholls State, South Alabama, Troy, Tulane and UAB.

On Friday, the competition is slated to resume at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) and is being held at the University of Alabama Tennis Complex.
