Golf Continues Fall Season At Firestone Invitational

AKRON, Ohio -- The Samford University men's golf team will compete in its second major tournament of the 2013 fall season this week as the Bulldogs face a talented field of 16 teams, Monday and Tuesday, at The Firestone Invitational, Presented by FirstEnergy Solutions, at the par-72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club North Course.
This year's tournament includes a field comprised of No. 69-ranked Samford, host-school Akron, Nebraska, College of Charleston, Ohio, No. 85 Davidson, Old Dominion, Eastern Michigan, Francis Marion, No. 86 St. Mary's (Ca.), Georgetown, No. 5-ranked USC-Aiken (DII), Illinois State, No. 67 Washington State, Kansas State, Western Kentucky and Miami (Ohio).
Play is set to begin Monday with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. (CDT) with the second round to immediately follow the conclusion of the first round. The third and final round will begin with tee times from the No. 1 and No. 10 tees beginning at 7:30 a.m., on Tuesday.
In Samford's first outing of the 2013 fall season, the Bulldogs received top-10 performances from junior Zach Hughes and true freshman Garrett Moores en route to a third-place finish at the 29th-annual Francis Marion SpringHill Suites Intercollegiate held at the par-72, 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina.
Hughes, the Bulldogs' talented native of Mobile, Ala., earned runner-up honors after posting a three-round total of 7-under-par 209 (69-71-69). He finished just three strokes behind Individual Medalist Carter Davis of Presbyterian College and was tied with USC Upstate's Ryan Cornfield.
Samford's Moores, a highly-touted recruit from Huntsville, Ala., registered an eighth-place finish in his first collegiate event by carding a stellar 3-under-par 213 (69-73-71). Additionally, the Bulldogs' junior William Catanzaro turned in a 54-hole score of 1-under-par 215 (72-68-75) and earned a 13th-place finish.
Rounding out Samford's scoring were sophomores Mac Hennessy (79-75-70 = 224) and Chris Clouser (77-73-77 = 227).
The Samford University men's golf team will begin play in The 2013 Firestone Invitational, Presented by FirstEnergy Solutions, on Monday at 7:30 a.m., at the par-72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club North Course.
