WBB To Play At North Florida Monday

GAME NOTES

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford women's basketball team will travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to take on the North Florida Ospreys Monday at 4:30 p.m. (CT) at UNF Arena.
 
Samford enters the game with a record of 1-1 on the young season. The Bulldogs are coming off a 50-49 loss to Talladega College on Thursday. Samford opened the season on Nov. 10, with a 62-60 win at Memphis.
 
Through the first two games of the 2013-14 season, Samford's top two scorers are true freshmen. Ellen Riggins leads the team, averaging 15.5 points per game. Hannah Nichols is second with a 10.5-point per game average.
 
Riggins is also Samford's leader in rebounding, grabbing 7.5 boards per contest. Christy Robinson and Nichols average 5.0 rebounds per game each.
 
Freshman Brittany Stevens is the team leader in assists. Stevens is currently averaging 4.0 assists per game. Riggins and Robinson average 1.5 assists each per contest.
           
North Florida is currently 1-2 overall. The Ospreys defeated Edward Waters by a score of 76-55 Thursday evening. In addition to the Edward Waters game, UNF has losses to Miami (39-79) and Florida (77-88).
           
The Ospreys are led in scoring by Destinee Smith, averaging 13.0 points per game. Paulina Zaveckaite averages 8.7 points per game, while Bailey Florin averages 8.0 points per contest.
           
Zaveckaite leads North Florida in rebounding, pulling down 7.0 boards per contest. Chandler Merkerson averages 6.3 rebounds per game.
           
Smith is the UNF team-leader in assists, dishing out 2.7 assists per game. Merkerson averages 2.0 assists per game so far this season.
 
Samford is in the middle of a stretch of playing 10 of its first 12 games away from the friendly confines of the Pete Hanna Center. The Bulldogs are currently 1-0 in road games during the stretch. The only home games during the period are last Thursday's game against Talladega College, and a Dec. 7 contest against Mercer.
 
Monday afternoon's game marks the first-ever meeting between Samford and North Florida.
