Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C.—The Samford women's basketball team held an 11-point halftime lead, but the Bulldogs were outscored by 12 points in the second half in a 63-62 Southern Conference loss at College of Charleston Monday evening.
The loss marked the second-straight one-point loss for the Bulldogs. Samford fell at Georgia Southern, 52-51, on Saturday.
“This is about as tough as it gets,” Samford head coach
Mike Morris said. “We have to be better in late-game situations, and that is my fault. We have to be smarter with our fouls. Our team played hard, they battled, but we just ran out of gas.”
Samford was led in the game by senior guard
Jazmine Martin with 13 points. Sophomore
Taylor Reece and freshman
Krista Stricklin had 12 points each for the Bulldogs. Freshman
Rebecca Webster added eight points, while senior
Hannah Dawson had seven points and six rebounds for Samford.
Reece and Dawson both fouled out in the second half, leaving Samford with just six players for the last several minutes of the contest.
For College of Charleston, Latisha Harris led the way with 20 points. Afreyea Tolbert and Alyssa Frye had 16 points each for the Cougars.
The game went back-and-forth through most of the first half, with neither team able to build more than a three-point lead until Samford took a 14-10 lead with 8:15 to go in the first half after a three-pointer by Martin. After a basket by Charleston cut the lead to 14-12, Samford went on an 8-0 run to take a 22-12 lead with 4:00 to go in the half after a three-pointer by
Kendall Schwantz.
Charleston scored the next five points to cut the Samford lead to five points at 22-17 with 3:02 to go in the half after a three-pointer by Frye. Samford, however, scored the final six points of the first half to take a 28-17 lead into halftime.
College of Charleston opened the second half with a 7-0 run to cut the Samford lead to four points at 28-24 with 18:41 to go after a layup by Tolbert. With Samford leading, 31-27, College of Charleston went on a 9-3 run to take its first lead of the second half at 36-34 with 13:46 to go after two free throws by Harris.
Samford then scored the next seven points to take a 41-36 lead with 12:18 to go after a jumper by Reece. With Samford leading, 43-38, Charleston went on a 6-0 run to take a 44-43 lead with 8:53 to go after a three-pointer by Frye. Samford then went on a 7-2 run to take a 50-46 lead with 6:53 to go after a three-point play by Reece.
College of Charleston scored the next seven points to take a 53-50 lead with 4:35 to go after a jumper by Tolbert. Samford battled back to take the lead again at 59-57 after a three-pointer by Stricklin with 1:04 left in the game. The Cougars, however, hit six free throws down the stretch to take a 63-59 lead with five seconds to go. A three-pointer by Martin at the buzzer made the final score 63-62.
With the loss, Samford falls to 12-14 overall and 9-8 in the Southern Conference. College of Charleston improves to 12-13 overall and 8-8 in league play.
Samford will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 23, when the Bulldogs play host to Davidson. The game, which will be Senior Day for the Bulldogs' Dawson and Martin, is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center. Dawson and Martin will be honored in a ceremony prior to the game.
