Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C.—The Citadel's Jonathan Stokes singled up the middle to drive in Tyler Griffin in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift The Citadel's baseball team to a 2-1 Southern Conference win over Samford Saturday afternoon at Riley Park.
The teams entered the ninth inning tied at 1-1. In the top of the ninth, Samford's
Phillip Ervin led the inning off with a single, but the Bulldogs were unable to produce a run. In the bottom of the ninth, Griffin singled up the middle to lead off the inning. After moving to second and third base on back-to-back ground outs, Griffin scored the game-winning run on Stokes' walk-off single.
The loss drops Samford's season record to 9-7 overall and 0-2 in Southern Conference play. The Citadel improves to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in league play.
For Samford in the loss,
Caleb Bryson went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Eric Wright (2-1) pitched 8.1 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford. Wright recorded one strikeout and allowed one walk.
The Citadel was led at the plate by Bo Thompson, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Stokes had his one RBI in a 1-for-4 performance. Skylar Hunter (1-1) pitched the final inning to earn the win for The Citadel.
Samford jumped on top first with a run in the top of the second inning. With one out in the inning,
Christiaan Durdaller walked.
Drew McWhorter was then hit by a pitch, moving Durdaller to second base. Bryson then singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Durdaller for a 1-0 Samford lead.
The Citadel tied the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hughston Armstrong singled to center field to lead off the inning. Thompson later doubled to right field to drive in Armstrong to tie the score at 1-1.
