ELON, N.C. – The Samford University women's tennis team cruised to a 4-1 victory against the Davidson Wildcats on Thursday in the opening round of the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament being held at the Burlington Tennis Center.

With its quick win, Samford (9-14) advanced to the quarterfinal round of play Friday where the Bulldogs will square off against the top-seeded College of Charleston at 8 a.m. (CDT). Friday's match will be held at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center hosted by Elon University.

Samford jumped out to an early 1-0 lead Thursday by earning the all-important doubles point. In the No. 1 doubles contest, the Bulldogs' duo comprised of Kristin Lewis and Emily Mallory tallied an 8-3 triumph over Brites Moniz-Soares and Elaina Cummer of Davidson (9-12), while Samford's pairing of Carita Moolman and Adri Lochner posted a similar 8-3 victory on court No. 3.

In singles play, the Bulldogs quickly extended its lead to 3-0 with back-to-back 6-2, 6-1 victories from Stephanie N'tcha and Mallory. N'tcha, Samford's powerful sophomore from Abomey-Calavi, Benin, defeated the Wildcats' Cummer on court No. 2, while Mallory breezed to her straight-set triumph over Catherine Wood in the No. 5 singles contest.

Davidson tallied its lone point of the match on court No. 1 where Moniz-Soarez defeated the Bulldogs' Lewis, 6-2, 6-1.

Samford then clinched the 4-1 first-round victory on court No. 6 as sophomore AnnMarie Lyon rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over the Wildcats' Elise Held.

The victorious Samford University women's tennis team advanced to face the top-seeded College of Charleston Cougars at 8 a.m. (CDT) Friday in a quarterfinal contest to be held at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the campus of Elon University.

Earlier this season, in their annual SoCon matchup, the Bulldogs dropped a 7-0 decision at College of Charleston on April 6.
