Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C.— The Samford baseball team was eliminated from the Southern Conference Tournament with a 2-1 setback to Appalachian State Thursday afternoon at Furman's Latham Stadium.
With the loss, Samford ends its season with a record of 27-30. Appalachian State improves its record to 29-23. The Mountaineers advance to take on either Western Carolina or The Citadel on Friday at 3 p.m. at Fluor Field.
C.K. Irby (7-6) took the loss on the mound for Samford. Irby pitched 9.0 innings, giving up two runs on five hits. Both of the runs Irby surrendered were unearned runs as a result of two Samford errors in the sixth inning.
“Unfortunately, it's kind of a fitting end to the season,” Samford head coach
Casey Dunn said. “We pitched really well with C.K., but we swung the bats really poorly and we made the two big errors in the sixth. This was a tough day and a tough end to the season.”
For Samford at the plate,
Christiaan Durdaller went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Zeth Stone,
Richard Greene and Irby also had one hit each in the loss.
Appalachian State's Sam Agnew-Wieland (7-6) tossed 8.0 innings, giving up one run on five hits and striking out seven batters to earn the win for the Mountaineers. Rob Marcello and Josh Wilson combined to get the final three outs for Appalachian State. Wilson picked up his third save of the season.
The Mountaineers were led offensively by Will Callaway, driving in one run and going 1-for-4 at the plate. Hector Crespo also had one RBI for Appalachian State.
Samford put the first run on the scoreboard, grabbing an early lead in the bottom of the third inning. Stone singled to lead off the inning.
Phillip Ervin then reached base on a fielder's choice with Stone being thrown out at second base. Ervin then stole second base and third base with one out. With two outs, Durdaller singled through the right side of the infield to drive in Ervin for a 1-0 Samford lead.
Appalachian State came back with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Preston Troutman singled to lead off the inning. Josh Zumbrook then reached base on a Samford error, with Troutman moving to third base. Crespo then hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Troutman to tie the score at 1-1. Zumbrook moved to third base on the play on another Samford error. With two outs, Callaway singled up the middle to drive in Zumbrook to give the Mountaineers a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Durdaller reached base on a walk to lead off the inning. He stole second base with two outs, but the Bulldogs were unable to drive him home, ending the game in a 2-1 loss.
