JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee – The Samford University volleyball team fell in its third-straight Southern Conference match on Saturday, Nov. 8, against East Tennessee State University by the score 3-1 inside Brooks Gym. It's the first time the Bulldogs have dropped three-straight SoCon matches since 2010.
Samford (16-11, 10-4 SoCon) struggled offensively early on in the match against a senior laden East Tennessee State (15-15, 9-5 SoCon) squad. The Bulldogs managed a .133 attack percentage in the set while the Bucs notched a .400 percentage thanks in part to Meredith Hardy's 6 of 7 (.857) performance. ETSU took the set convincingly 25-19 over SU.
The Bulldogs bounced back in the second set to take it 25-21 over the Bucs and a 1-1 tie heading into the intermission. Senior outside hitter
Michaela Reesor tallied six kills on 13 attempts (.385) to help spark Samford's offense.
East Tennessee State recovered out of the break and tallied 12 kills on 29 attempts (.310) en route to a 25-20 win in the set to go ahead 2-1 in the match. Samford held the lead for the first half of the set and led by as much as 11-9 before the Bucs rallied to take the lead 15-14.
Samford's offense gained traction in the fourth set but so did ETSU's as both teams hits .240 and .286 respectively. The set went back and forth for the majority as there were 16 ties and only three lead changes before the Bucs took the set 29-27 and the match 3-1.
Reesor ended the night with a double-double of 20 kills (.435) and 13 digs in the match to lead the Bulldogs while sophomore
Erin Bognar followed up with a 16-kill performance.
The Bulldogs return home for its final two matches of the regular season to take on Furman University on Friday, Nov. 14, for senior night then play host to Wofford College on Saturday, Nov. 15. Both matches will be available on the SoCon Digital Network.
