MOBILE, Ala. -- The Samford University men's golf team turned in its best score of the 2014 Mobile Bay Intercollegiate on Tuesday as the Bulldogs carded a third-round score of 295 en route to a 15th-place finish at the talent-laden, two-day event held hosted by the University of South Alabama at the Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course.
The 15-team field competed in 36 holes Monday followed by the final 18-hole round Tuesday at the par-72, 7,212-yard course. The season-opening tournament featured 10 nationally-ranked teams, including No. 27 Auburn, No. 28 Wake Forest and No. 36 Kentucky.
Additionally, the field also consisted of Samford, No. 41 Memphis, No. 53 South Alabama, No. 58 Georgia State, No. 71 Chattanooga, No. 79 Ole Miss, No. 84 Middle Tennessee, No. 98 Davidson, Akron, Illinois State, Southern Miss and Texas State.
The Bulldogs carded a third-round score of 295 on Tuesday and finished the tournament with a final team total of 909 (301-313-295). Samford rallied for its best mark of the week in the third round and nearly caught Southern Miss for 14th place.
The Bulldogs' Zach Hughes and William Catanzaro both paced the team with identical 54-hole scores of 221. Catanzaro blazed the course for a 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday to finish the event tied for 26th place in the individual standings. Hughes' best score of the tournament occurred on Monday's second round as he posted an even-par 72.
Rounding out Samford's scores in the two-day competition were Ashton Nix (77-82-73 = 232), Mac Hennesey (77-82-78 = 237) and Chris Clouser (75-83-85 = 243).
No. 27-ranked Auburn claimed the team title of the event and streaked to the championship with a three-round total of 6-under-par 858. Additionally, Wake Forest's Clancy Waugh earned Individual Medalist honors with a 6-under-par total of 210.
The Samford University men's golf team will next be in action March 3-4, at Hoover Golf Course as the Bulldogs are slated to host the 2014 Samford Intercollegiate.
