BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University men's golf team will host its first tournament of the 2013-14 season this week as the Bulldogs welcome 15 visiting teams to compete in the annual Samford Intercollegiate being held at the Hoover Country Club.
The 54-hole competition will be held Monday and Tuesday, and is slated to begin Monday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (CST). Hoover Country Club is a highly-acclaimed 7,001-yard, par-72 golf course.
The field of this week's 2014 Samford Intercollegiate consists of the following teams: Samford (host), Austin Peay, Campbell, Belmont, Bowling Green, Eastern Kentucky, Francis Marion, Georgia Southern, Jacksonville State, Miles College, Montevallo, South Alabama, Southern Illinois, UAB, Western Carolina and Western Kentucky.
This week, Samford continues play in its 2014 campaign boasting five returning players from last season's roster. This year's squad will be led by senior William Catanzaro, juniors Mac Hennessy and Zach Hughes, sophomores Chris Clouser and Clay Nolen, as well as highly-touted true freshmen Robert Adams, Austin Jackson, Garrett Moores and Ashton Nix.
Head coach Woodie Eubanks is in the midst of his 11th season at the helm of the Samford men's golf program. In 2011, he was named the Southern Conference Men's Golf Coach of the Year.
Two weeks ago, Samford opened its 2014 campaign at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate as the Bulldogs placed 15th at the talent-laden, two-day event held hosted by the University of South Alabama at the Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course.
The season-opening tournament featured 10 nationally-ranked teams, including No. 27 Auburn, No. 28 Wake Forest and No. 36 Kentucky.
Additionally, the field also consisted of Samford, No. 41 Memphis, No. 53 South Alabama, No. 58 Georgia State, No. 71 Chattanooga, No. 79 Ole Miss, No. 84 Middle Tennessee, No. 98 Davidson, Akron, Illinois State, Southern Miss and Texas State.
The Bulldogs carded a third-round score of 295 at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate and finished the tournament with a final team total of 909 (301-313-295). Samford rallied for its best mark of the week in the third round and nearly caught Southern Miss for 14th place.
The Bulldogs' Hughes and Catanzaro both paced the team with identical 54-hole scores of 221. Catanzaro blazed the course for a 1-under-par 71 on Feb. 17 to finish the event tied for 26th place in the individual standings. Hughes' best score of the tournament occurred in the second round as he posted an even-par 72.
Rounding out Samford's scores in the two-day competition were Nix (77-82-73 = 232), Hennessy (77-82-78 = 237) and Clouser (75-83-85 = 243).
In last season's Samford Intercollegiate, the Bulldogs posted a fifth-place finish out of 18 teams at the 54-hole, two-day tournament held at Hoover Country Club.
The Bulldogs' Drew Aimone and Casey O'Toole both registered top-five finishes in the individual standings and paced Samford to its total team score of 888 (298-293-297). The Bulldogs concluded the 2013 Samford Intercollegiate just one stroke behind fourth-place Winthrop University at 887.
Aimone turned in his best round of the tournament on the final day of play as he carded a 3-under par 69. His 54-hole score of 213 proved to be tied for second place in the individual standings.
Vanderbilt's Hunter Stewart claimed Individual Medalist honors at the 2013 Samford Intercollegiate by firing a three-round score of 5-under par 211 (70-68-73).
The Bulldogs' O'Toole closed out the two-day, three-round competition with a final tally of 1-under par 215. With his performance, Samford's native of nearby Oneonta, garnered sole possession of fourth place in the individual standings.
Last season, Samford's Nolen made history by recording his second hole-in-one in consecutive days at the Samford Intercollegiate. On the opening day of the tournament, he aced the 181-yard fifth hole. Then, in the second round of play, Nolen furthered his legend by earning yet another hole-in-one on the 216-yard second hole.
Auburn finished last year's three-round competition with a total team score of 865 (291-288-286) and won the championship title of the Samford Intercollegiate by 11 strokes over Vanderbilt (876). The top five was rounded out by Georgia Southern (880), Winthrop University (887) and Samford (888).
The 2014 Samford Intercollegiate will begin Monday at 8:30 a.m. (CST) with the opening two rounds of play being held at the Hoover Country Club. The teams are then scheduled to play the final 18 holes Tuesday beginning at 9 a.m.
