Box Score 2 AUBURN, Ala. – The Samford University softball team captured two victories over Mississippi Valley State University (10-0) and Purdue University (6-3) on day two of the Wilson/DeMarini Classic held at Jane B. Moore Field on Saturday, Feb. 22.
GAME 1
The Bulldogs (10-3) opened up day two of the Wilson/DeMarini Classic with the Delta Devilettes (1-9) and cruised to a 10-0 victory.
SU recorded its first shut out of the season through the combined efforts of freshmen pitchers
Jessica Stone (1-0) and
Rebecca Leonard.
Freshman
Abby Sweeney put Samford on the scoreboard 2-0 with her first career home run that went off the Auburn scoreboard in left center field in the top of the second inning.
SU plated two more runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. With the bases loaded and no outs on the board junior
Madison Dickey brought in the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to left field while senior
Arica Dykes knocked an infield single to plate junior
Abby Adams from third base.
In the top of the sixth inning with two outs on the board, the Bulldogs posted five runs to close out the game against MVSU.
Samford posted 13 hits while Stone scattered four Mississippi Valley hits through four innings to pick up her first victory of the year. Leonard tabbed two scoreless innings of work in the effort.
GAME 2
The Bulldogs (11-3) used a six run fourth inning rally with two outs on the board to take away a victory from Purdue (4-5-1).
The Boilermakers opened up the game and plated three runs in the first inning. Lindsey Raines highlighted the scoring affair for Purdue with a home run over the right center field wall to make the score 3-0.
Samford came into the game scoring a majority of its' runs in the fourth inning, so when the time came the 'Dogs were poised to make a comeback.
Dykes led off the the bottom of the fourth and took a pitch off the shoulder to give the Bulldogs its first weapon on the base pads. Freshman
Abbie Miranda moved Dykes around to second on a fielder's choice bunt while junior
Megan Dowdy advanced the two over to second and third on a sacrifice bunt to third base.
The stage was now set for Adams who forced the Purdue third baseman to make an errant throw to first which allowed Dykes to cross home plate and make the score 3-1.
The next Bulldog batter was retired, but like in game one against MVSU, SU specialized in scoring runs with two outs. That's when sophomore
Hannah Taylor blasted a shot over the Boilermaker left fielder to plate two more Samford runs and tie the game at 3-3.
The Bulldog offense wasn't satisfied with just tying the game as Sweeney singled and moved Taylor over to third. With a one-one count, sophomore
Caroline Wilder blistered a shot over the center field fall to give Samford a 6-3 lead that it would not relinquish.
Mollie Hanson (6-3) shut down the Boilermakers offense after the first inning to record the complete game victory.
Samford returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 23, for a rematch with Mississippi Valley State on the final day of the Wilson/DiMarini Classic at Jane B. Moore Field.
