MOBILE, Ala. -- In its first tournament of the 2014 spring season, the Samford University women's golf team registered a fifth-place performance Tuesday at the USA Women's Invitational, which was hosted by the University of South Alabama at the par-72, 6,071-yard Azalea City Golf Club.
The Bulldogs tallied a third-round score of 312 on Tuesday to conclude the 54-hole competition with a final team mark of 918 (300-306-312).
Memphis rallied to win the championship title of the two-day event with a three-round total of 905 (300-304-301), while Jacksonville State placed second (303-300-304 = 907) and South Alabama earned a third-place finish (310-300-299 = 909).
Individually, Samford's true freshman Sydney Needham fired a team-best, 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday to register a sixth-place finish out of 83 competitors at the 14-team event. Needham, the Bulldogs' talented native of Carrollton, Ga., closed out the tournament with a 54-hole score of 224 (75-76-73).
Samford's Bailey Gray and Natalie Mitchell finished tied for 17th and 29th place, respectively, Tuesday. Gray carded a third-round mark of 79 and concluded the week with a three-round score of 230 (75-76-79). Mitchell, who posted a brilliant opening-round tally of even-par 72 on Monday, closed out the competition with a 54-hole mark of 235 (72-84-79).
The Bulldogs' scoring at the 2014 USA Women's Invitational was rounded out by true freshman Arin Eddy (78-77-85 = 240) and senior Alex Jasper (83-77-81 = 241).
Along with Samford, the field for this week's tournament consisted of the following teams: South Alabama, Alabama State, UALR, Eastern Kentucky, Jackson State, Jacksonville State, Louisiana-Monroe, New Orleans (UNO), Southern Illinois, Spring Hill, Troy, UAB and Western Kentucky.
Memphis' Leighann Cabush garnered Individual Medalist honors Tuesday after she finished the tournament with a three-round total of 220 (73-73-74). Cabush was able to hold off Jacksonville State's Anne Kathrin Albrecht by two strokes in the final round of competition. Albrecht completed the 54-hole tournament with a mark of 222 (73-74-75).
The Samford University women's golf team will next be in action March 2-4 as the Bulldogs head to Kiawah Island, S.C., for the 2014 Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic, which will be held at both Oak Point and Cougar Point Country Clubs.
