Baseball Earns 8-3 Win At The Citadel

T.J. Dixon had two hits, including a triple, and two RBI in Sunday's win at The Citadel.
Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Samford baseball team earned an 8-3 win at The Citadel in the third game of a three-game Southern Conference series Sunday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley Park.
 
With the win, Samford wins the series over The Citadel, two games to one. For the season Samford is 13-10 overall and 2-1 in SoCon games. The Citadel drops to 10-14 overall and 1-5 in SoCon play.
 
Samford starting pitcher Alex Milazzo (3-1) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits to earn the win on the mound for the Bulldogs. Chase Traffica and Andres Gracia pitched 2.0 innings each to finish the game on the mound for Samford.
 
"It was good to see Alex get back to form," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "He's been struggling this year, but we knew from last year what he was capable of. We started the season off wanting him to throw on Sunday's not because he was our third guy, but because so many series come down to that third game. We wanted the most veteran guy and the most dependable guy to throw on Sunday, and today he gave us that Sunday start we anticipated."
 
Offensively for Samford, Tyler Filliben went 2-for-4 with three RBI. T.J. Dixon went 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI. Drew McWhorter and Brandon Powell had two hits each. Danny Rodriguez and Frankie Navarrete drove in a run each for Samford.
 
The Citadel's Austin Mason (1-1) pitched 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits to take the loss on the mound. Calvin Orth led The Citadel at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI.
 
The Citadel struck first, plating a run in the bottom of the third inning. With one out in the inning, Orth hit a solo home run to left field for a 1-0 Citadel lead.
 
Samford came back with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead. McWhorter and Brandon Powell singled, and Caleb Bryson walked to load the bases with no outs. With one out, Rodriguez singled to drive in McWhorter to tie the score. With two outs, Filliben singled to drive in Bryson and Rodriguez for a two-run Samford lead.
 
The Citadel scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Samford lead to 3-2. Mason Davis hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Johnathan Stokes for The Citadel's second run of the game.
 
Samford added four runs in the top of the sixth inning to push its lead to 7-2. McWhorter singled and later scored on a wild pitch for the inning's first run. Navarrete later hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Powell for a 5-2 lead. Dixon then singled to drive in Bryson for Samford's sixth run of the game. Filliben then singled to drive in Damon Waller for a 7-2 Samford lead.
 
The Citadel plated a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Samford lead to 7-3. Connor Walsh hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Bo Thompson to bring The Citadel to within four runs.
 
Samford came back with a run in the top of the eighth to increase its lead to 8-3. Bryson singled to lead off the inning. Dixon later tripled to score Bryson for a five-run Samford lead.
 
Samford will return to action on Tuesday, March 25, when the Bulldogs play at in-state rival Jacksonville State. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start from Rudy Abbott Field.
