WBB Eliminated From SoCon Tournament By Davidson

ASHEVILLE, N.C. –
The sixth-seeded Samford women's basketball team was eliminated from the Southern Conference Tournament with a 55-42 setback to third-seeded Davidson in the quarterfinals of the tournament Saturday evening at Kimmel Arena.
 
"Davidson is a good team," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "I thought our team came out and played well. I thought we were tough early. I thought we were ready to guard, which is one thing we didn't do the previous two times we played them. But, after we took it to them a little early, Davidson stepped it up a notch, and that is what good teams do."
 
With the loss, Samford ends its season with a record of 10-20 overall. The Bulldogs were 8-10 in Southern Conference play. Davidson improves to 15-15 overall, and the Wildcats were 11-7 in SoCon play. The Wildcats advance to the tournament semifinals where they will take on seventh-seeded Western Carolina on Sunday.
 
In the loss, Samford was led by freshman guard Kassidy Blevins with 13 points. Fellow freshman Ellen Riggins added eight points.
 
Senior center Christy Robinson led Samford in rebounding with eight. The game was the final game for Robinson and fellow senior Shelby Campbell, who played the final two minutes of the game. The action was Campbell's first since breaking her knee cap in a game at Appalachian State on Jan. 11.
 
Davidson was led by Laura Murray with 26 points and eight rebounds. Dakota Dukes had 14 points for the Wildcats. Rachel Piles led all rebounders with 10 for Davidson.
 
In the first half, after Samford jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, Davidson answered with a 9-0 run to take a 9-4 lead with 12:56 to go after a basket by Murray. Samford fought back to cut the lead to two points at 11-9 with 10:55 to go after a layup by Lydia McGee.
 
Davidson pushed its lead out to as much as six in the first half at 17-11 with 5:29 left after a jumper by Murray. Samford fought back to cut the lead to two points at 19-17 with 3:02 to go after a pair of free throws by Clara Young. Davidson took a 24-19 advantage into halftime.
 
On the first possession of the second half, Blevins hit a three-pointer to pull Samford to within two points at 24-22 with 19:52 to go. Davidson, however, answered with a 10-2 run to push its lead out to 10 points at 34-24 with 15:01 left following a layup by Murray.
 
Davidson pushed its lead out to as many as 18 points at 49-31 with 4:48 to go after a three-pointer by Murray. With Davidson leading, 55-37, a three-pointer by Blevins and a layup by Amara Mayers late made the final score 55-42.
 
For the game, Samford out-rebounded Davidson, 45-41. The Bulldogs made just 24.6 percent of their shots overall, including 22.7 percent from three-point range. Davidson made 35.1 percent overall and 30.8 percent from beyond the arc.
