Baseball Evens Series With 6-5 Win At Davidson

Andres Gracia earned his 10th save of the season in Saturday's 6-5 win at Davidson.
Box Score DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Samford baseball team evened its Southern Conference series at Davidson with a 6-5 win over the Wildcats Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
 
"What a great win," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "Coming off a tough loss last night, in a tight, one-run game today, we made some big plays and some big pitches. I'm really proud of the way the guys competed today."
 
In the win, Samford was led at the plate by Tyler Filliben, going 2-for-5 with a double and one RBI. Heath Quinn hit a three-run home run in a 1-for-3 performance at the plate.
 
Samford starting pitcher Jared Brasher (2-2) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing three runs, just two earned, on six hits to earn the win on the mound for the Bulldogs. Andres Gracia pitched the final inning to earn his 10th save of the season. Mark Donham also pitched 2.1 innings in relief, allowing no runs on just one hit to help hold the lead for the Bulldogs.
 
Davidson was led at the plate by Ryan Lowe, going 3-for-5 with a double and one RBI. Forrest Brandt hit a home run, going 1-for-3 at the plate. Clark Beeker (2-1) pitched 4.1 innings in relief, giving up three runs on three hits to take the loss on the mound for the Wildcats.
 
Davidson grabbed an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Lee Miller was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Nathan Becker for the game's first run. Daniel Gerow then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Sam Foy for a 2-0 Davidson lead.
 
The Bulldogs tied the score with two runs in the top of the third inning. Hunter Swilling reached base on a Davidson error, and then advanced to third base on another error. Swilling then scored when T.J. Dixon grounded out to first base. Filliben then doubled and later scored on another Davidson error to tie the score at 2-2.
 
The Wildcats took the lead again with a run in the bottom of the third inning. With one out in the inning, Brandt hit a solo home run to left field to make the score 3-2.
 
Samford took the lead with four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Filliben singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Swilling to tie the score at 3-3. Quinn later hit a three-run home run with Filliben and Drew McWhorter on base or a 6-3 Samford lead.
 
Davidson came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Samford lead to 6-5. David Daniels singled to drive in Ben Arkin for the first run of the inning. Lowe then singled to drive in Andrew Pope for Davidson's fifth run of the game.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 21-14 overall and 7-4 in the Southern Conference. Davidson falls to 21-10 overall and 11-3 in league play. The series is now tied at one game apiece.
