CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Samford University baseball team belted seven home runs on its way to a 16-1, seven-inning win at West Georgia Tuesday evening at Cole Field.
With the win, Samford improved its record to 13-14 on the season. West Georgia fell to 8-21 with the loss.
For Samford at the plate,
Parker McDonald went 3-for-4 with two home runs and two RBI.
Luke Boykin went 4-for-5 with a home run, a triple and five RBI.
Hayden Perry went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI.
Cade Carr went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI.
Jake Souders went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI.
Will Lawrence also homered, going 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Will Andre (1-0) pitched 3.0 innings, giving up no runs on one hit and striking out five batters to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
Palmer O'Beirne,
Austin Tommasini and
Andrew Marble also saw time on the mound for Samford. The Bulldogs' pitchers combined to strike out 11 West Georgia batters.
"This was just a complete performance," Samford head coach Tony David said. "It kind of started with Andre on the mound, his first start as a true freshman. We wanted to give him a shot to run out there first. After a little bit of a of a shaky start with the first couple of hitters, he really settled in and was dominant from there. Cade got the scoring started with that blast in the first inning and it was just one of those weird days at the park where we just drove the ball well."
For West Georgia, Blake Bradford, Patrick McCullough, Conner Hilton and Anthony Cole had one hit each. Wilson Donnelly (0-3) pitched 4.0 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits to take the loss for the Wolves.
Samford jumped on top early with three runs in the top of the first inning. With one out in the inning, Carr hit a solo home run to left field for the game's first run. Boykin later singled to drive in Souders to make the score 2-0.
Jackson Harris then singled to drive in Boykin for a 3-0 Samford lead.
In the third inning, McDonald homered to left field to push the Samford lead to 4-0. In the fifth inning, Boykin hit a two-run home run to left field for a 6-0 Samford lead. McDonald followed that with his second home run of the game to make the score 7-0. Later in the fifth,
Gus Gandy singled to drive in Perry for an 8-0 Samford lead.
West Georgia plated a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Samford lead to 8-1. Samford added four runs in the top of the sixth inning to push its lead to 12-1. Souders hit a solo home run to center field for the first run of the inning. Perry later hit a three-run homer to left field for an 11-run Samford advantage.
Samford added four final runs in the seventh inning to make the final score 16-1. Boykin hit a two-run triple to center field for the first two runs of the inning. Lawrence then hit a two-run homer for the game's final two runs.
Samford will return home to play host to ETSU this weekend. The teams are set to play Thursday at 6 p.m., Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
