Bulldogs Drop Series With Phoenix In Extra Innings

Box Score ELON, N.C. –  The Samford University softball team dropped the final game of the three game series 3-2 to Elon University on Sunday, April 27, at the Hunt Softball Complex.

The Bulldogs (34-15, 9-8 SoCon) wasted no time to take the lead over the Phoenix (24-24-1, 6-12 SoCon) as Abby Adams sent a deep fly ball to the wall in left center field for a one out double. Callie Brister followed up the at bat being hit by the pitch to put runners on first and second for Caroline Wilder.

With one out Wilder roped a shot the wall down the left field line that allowed Adams to score from second.

Samford struck again in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead after Hannah Taylor led off the inning with a single then eventually brought home by Megan Dowdy's double to wall out in right center.

The Phoenix jumped right back into the contest after Alaina Hall picked up a two out walk to set the stage for Carleigh Nestor. Nestor drilled a ball over the wall in left center to tie the game at 2-2.

After Alli Burdette retired 12 straight Samford batters the Bulldogs mustered some offense in the top of the seventh and were able to load the bases before the Phoenix were able to get out of the jam.

Brister laced a ball down the right field line to lead off the eighth inning and Wilder put runners at the corners after being hit by the first pitch of her at bat.

The Samford offense stalled yet again as the Phoenix defense recorded three straight outs following the great start to the inning.

Elon's Alaina Hall drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth with a dribbler up the middle of the Bulldogs defense.
