Bulldogs Split With Catamounts

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Samford University softball team split a pair of Southern Conference games with Western Carolina University on Saturday, April 5, at the Catamount Softball Complex. The Bulldogs timely hitting took game one 2-1 before letting go of game two 3-0 to the Catamounts.

GAME ONE (Samford 2, Western Carolina 1)
Shelby Scott and Callie Brister powered the Samford offense and were responsible both runs in the 2-1 game one victory over Western Carolina.

Mollie Hanson (16-6) pitched her 12th complete-game of the season with six strikeouts, two walks and only allowed six hits.

The Catamounts pounced and took an early 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs thanks to a Kara Salvo single up the middle to score Amelia Griffin in the bottom of the first.

Samford didn't stay down long as Scott tied the game 1-1 on a deep shot over the wall in left center field in the second; it was her fifth home run of the year.

Scott came through again for SU in the fifth as she roped a double down the left field line that scored Brister all the way from first.

Caroline Seay went 2 for 3 at the plate in the Bulldogs winning effort.

Taylor Sigmon (2-1) received the loss for WCU.

GAME TWO (Samford 0, Western Carolina 3)
Samford batters Megan Dowdy and Caroline Seay each drew walks against Western Carolina starting pitcher Mallory Broome before she was pulled.

WCU immediately brought in Jordan Garrett to face Abby Adams; Adams put down the sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third with only one out.

The Bulldogs, with the bases loaded, had its best opportunity to score in the contest but were unable to scratch across any runs in the frame as Garrett and the WCU defense got out of the inning.

Karley Harkey kick-started the game for the Catamount offense as she hit her second home run of the season to give WCU a 1-0 advantage over the Bulldogs.

Samford reached scoring position again in the fifth inning after Arica Dykes led off the inning with a single and was moved over to second on a SAC bunt by Abbie Miranda and eventually over to third on ground out to second by Dowdy.

Western Carolina plated another run and took a 2-0 lead in the fifth on a Brooke Coggins single up the middle that scored Harkey

WCU hit its second home run of the contest in the sixth off the bat of Taylor Sigmon to extend its' lead out to 3-0.

The Bulldogs managed to place three hits in the contest with with Seay going 1 for 2, Brister going 1 for 2 and Dykes going 1 for 3.

The series finale will take place on Sunday, April 6, with first-pitch set for noon.
