Bulldogs Drop Series With Catamounts

Box Score CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Samford University softball team dropped the final game of the series against Western Carolina University at the Catamount Softball Complex on April 6.

The game saw little offensive action as both pitchers Mollie Hanson and Jordan Garrett had dominant performances in the circle for each team.

Hanson pitched her 13th complete-game of the season and scattered four WCU hits over six innings of work; she also tallied three strikeouts and no walks in the contest.

Garrett for WCU also pitched a complete-game and fanned eight Bulldog batters with only giving up five hits and two walks.

The Catamounts found its way on to the scoreboard first as they scratched across a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Courtney Price led off the inning with a double into the gap in left center field and was moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kara Salvo.

Taylor Sigmon drove in Price on a hard shot to third which Callie Brister grounded cleanly, looked the runner back and made the out at first but Price advance home as soon as the ball was thrown and the play at the plate was not in time.

Samford did not go quietly as Megan Dowdy sent a hard hit shot into left center field for a one out double. Caroline Wilder picked up her third hit of the game and drove a double to center field to give Dowdy the opportunity to try and tie the game. However, centerfielder Amber Kimbrey connected with catcher Heather Chastain to throw out Dowdy at home to keep Samford off the scoreboard.

Wilder led the way at the plate for SU going 3 for 3 at the plate with Dowdy and Hannah Taylor Each recording a hit in the contest.

The Bulldogs return to action for a midweek double header against Tennessee Tech in Nashville, Tenn. on April 9, at 4 p.m.
