CHARLESTON, S.C. – Georgia Southern catcher Chase Griffin singled up the middle to drive in left fielder Stryker Brown to give the fourth-seeded Eagles a 4-3 victory over third-seeded Samford in the championship game of the Southern Conference Tournament Sunday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Samford led, 3-2 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, with star closer
Andres Gracia on the mound. Aaron Mizell singled through the right side of the infield to lead off the inning. Brown then walked, moving Mizell to second base. Brown and Mizell then moved up a base each on a balk. With one out, Hunter Thomas was intentionally walked to load the bases. Garrett Chapman then singled to drive in Mizell to tie the score at 3-3.
Samford head coach
Casey Dunn then put
Danny Rodriguez into the game as an extra infielder, taking out center fielder
T.J. Dixon to decrease the chances of a game-winning single. Griffin, however, singled up the middle, driving in Brown to give the Eagles the 4-3 victory.
"This was just a great college baseball game," Dunn said. "This was two really good teams playing well at the right time. Unfortunately for us, they had the last at-bat today, but it was a well-played game both ways."
With the loss, Samford ends its season with a record of 35-25. This marks just the third team in school history to win 35 games. Georgia Southern improves to 39-21. The Eagles earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. GSU will learn where and who it will play during the NCAA Selection Show Sunday at 11 a.m. CT on ESPNU.
