BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— The Samford women's basketball team will wrap up its two-game home stand by playing host to the Western Carolina Catamounts Monday at 1 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center.
Samford enters the game with a record of 10-8 overall and 3-0 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs are coming off a 76-65 win over Furman on Saturday.
The Bulldogs have had a lot of success at home so far this season, as Samford won all seven of its home games so far this season. The team is also off to a 3-0 start in conference play for the first time since the 2005-06 season when Samford was in the Ohio Valley Conference.
In Saturday's win over Furman, the Bulldogs were led by junior center
Taylor Reece with a career-high 28 points. Sophomore guard
Lydia McGee scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Sophomore guard
Brittany Stevens scored a career-high 11 points and dished out four assists. Sophomore guard
Hannah Nichols scored nine points, while sophomore forward
Ellen Riggins added six points. Freshman forward
Destiney Elliott led all rebounders with nine.
For the season, Nichols leads Samford in scoring, averaging 13.6 points per game. Reece averages 11.7 points per game for the Bulldogs.
Elliott is the team leader in rebounding, grabbing 6.4 rebounds per game. Junior guard
Krista Stricklin is averaging 4.7 rebounds per game so far this season.
Western Carolina is currently 8-10 overall and 0-3 in SoCon games. The Catamounts are coming off an 83-52 loss at Chattanooga on Saturday.
Western Carolina is led in scoring by Justin Taylor, averaging 17.4 points per game. Ace Easter scores 8.7 points per game for the Catamounts.
Sherae Bonner is the team leader in rebounding, grabbing 8.8 boards per contest. Erika Joseph averages 5.3 rebounds per game.
Samford and Western Carolina will be meeting for the 16th time, with Samford holding an 11-4 advantage in the series. The teams met earlier this season, with Samford winning at Western Carolina by a score of 60-50 on Jan. 12. Samford is 5-1 against Western Carolina in Birmingham, 5-2 when playing in Cullowhee, N.C., and 1-1 at neutral sites.
