Bulldogs Drop 3-0 Decision To Spartans

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford University volleyball team dropped its' fourth-straight match after the team fell 3-0 (27-25, 25-17, 25-18) to UNCG inside Fleming Gym on Saturday, Oct. 24.

It's been either feast or famine for Samford (8-11, 3-5 SoCon) as the Bulldogs have either swept opposing teams or have been swept in 11 out of their last 13 matches. UNCG (17-8, 7-3 SoCon) earned its' seventh-straight victory to move up into sole possession of third place in the Southern Conference standings.

A pair of Bulldogs each recorded their third double-double of the season as redshirt freshman Kate Neisler led the squad with 10 kills and 12 digs and freshman Taylor Anderton dished out 31 assists and chipped in 10 digs in the afternoon effort.

The Spartan trio of Jasmine Jones, Jessica Brezwyn and Ashley Muench each recorded nine kills in the match to pace their team. Katherine Santiago tallied a team-high 15 digs for UNCG in the match.

There was a combined total of 18 ties and eight lead changes throughout the entire match with 14 ties and seven lead changes coming in the first set alone where the Bulldogs fought with the Spartans into extra points before conceding a 27-25 result.

UNCG took the momentum gained from the first set over to the second and jumped out early on Samford 8-4 but the Bulldogs responded to rally and close down the Spartans lead to 11-9. The Spartans ripped off a 9-3 run shortly after to put the set out of reach from the Bulldogs.

Samford came out of the intermission with a purpose in the third set and jumped out in front early 5-0 over UNCG but the Spartans rallied back after a timeout to tie the set 6-6 on a kill by Julia Westerbur. The two teams battled back and forth UNCG gained separation thanks to a 10-4 run to break the 10-10 tie.

The Bulldogs return to action on Friday, Oct. 30, when the team returns to the Pete Hanna Center to face off against Wofford College at 7 p.m. CST
