BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford University volleyball team continues its' stretch of home matches with a contest against Chattanooga on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 6 p.m. inside the Pete Hanna Center.
Tomorrow will serve as the team's annual "Dig Orange" match which is in honor of former student-athlete Caroline Neisler and also to raise awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk which is set to take place the following night at Railroad Park.
The orange jerseys worn by the players during tomorrow's match will be auctioned off via a silent auction that will take place during the match; all proceeds will go directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Be The Match, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program, will also be present at the game with a registration table open for those who would like to sign up and be a potential donor.
The Bulldogs (9-11, 4-6 SoCon) are recently coming off of a 3-1 victory over Wofford College that snapped a four game skid in Southern Conference play. The Mocs (20-4, 9-2 SoCon) enter the contest ranked second overall in the SoCon standings and already have a win over the Bulldogs as they downed Samford in Chattanooga 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-19) on Oct. 17, inside of Mclellan Gymnasium.
Allie Davenport led the way for the Mocs in the contest with 17 kills (.412) while Catherine Chason snagged 11 digs in the contest. Chason was named this week's SoCon Defensive Player of the Week after 43 digs in a pair of matches against Mercer (17) and Wofford (26) to end the weekend with an average of 5.38 digs per set.
The young Samford squad will need to continue to improve as the regular season comes to a close. Promising talents such as freshmen
Krista Boesing,
Taylor Anderton and
Alana Schouten along with redshirt freshman
Kate Neisler and redshirt sophomore
T.J. Russell have stepped up in a big way so far this season but need to continue to make strides heading into the last few weeks.
Anderton is coming off of her fourth double-double performance from the setter position as she tallied 48 assists and 12 digs in last Friday's match against Wofford. Boesing and Neisler have stepped up on the outside while Russell has led the team from the middle. Schouten has been invaluable this year in the back row for the Bulldogs in their serve receive passing and is also a weapon at the service line.
Samford use of the serve as a weapon has only increased since entering SoCon play as the team currently ranks 2
nd in the league with an average of 1.67 service aces per set. A trio of Bulldogs can be attributed to this success as junior
Mattie Newson (4
th), sophomore
Morgan St. Germain (6
th) and Neisler (5
th) each rank in the top 10 in service aces per set.
The Bulldogs have exploited the middle of opposing defenses when given the chance and senior
Emily Meitz has spearheaded the charge as she tops the league with a .393 hitting percentage in conference play this season.
