Baseball Travels To ETSU For SoCon Series

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford baseball team will travel to Johnson City, Tenn., this weekend for a Southern Conference series at East Tennessee State. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 5:05 p.m. (CST), Saturday at 1:05 p.m. and Sunday at 12:05 p.m.
 
The Bulldogs enter the weekend with a record of 18-17 overall and 6-3 in Southern Conference play. Samford earned a 13-2 midweek win over Troy Tuesday evening.
 
For Samford offensively this season, freshman Austin Edens is batting .364 with nine doubles, six home runs and 27 RBI. Hunter Swilling leads the team in home runs with 10 and in RBI with 41, to go along with his .322 batting average. Richard Greene is hitting .328 with five doubles, seven home runs and 30 RBI.
 
Samford's starting pitcher for Friday's series opener will be right-hander Alex Ledford (4-3, 3.43 ERA). Right-handed pitcher Jared Brasher (2-2, 7.12 ERA) will start Saturday's game for Samford, and right-hander Parker Curry (5-3, 4.96 ERA) will get the starting nod in Sunday's series finale.
 
The Bucs are currently 14-21 overall and 3-6 in SoCon games. ETSU dropped a 6-5 decision to Virginia Tech Wednesday evening.
 
East Tennessee State is led offensively by Trey York, batting .413 with 12 doubles, seven home runs and 38 RBI. Chris Cook is hitting .394 with nine doubles, four home runs and 28 RBI. Kevin Phillips leads the team in home runs (9) and RBI (41).
 
ETSU had listed right-handed pitcher Lee Haeberle (3-5, 6.27 ERA) as its starter for Friday night's contest. Right-hander Jimmy Nesselt (4-4, 4.63 ERA) is slated to start Saturday's game, while right-hander Griffin Krieg (1-4, 7.74 ERA) is scheduled to start Sunday's game for the Bucs.
 
Samford and East Tennessee State have met just once previously in baseball, with ETSU holding a 1-0 advantage in the series. The teams met in 2005, with the Bucs coming away with an 11-6 win in Johnson City, Tenn.
