Baseball Drops Game One To The Citadel

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team dropped a 6-4 decision to The Citadel in the first game of a three-game Southern Conference series Friday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

"I thought we were really poor offensively," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "We just did a terrible job offensively, and that's disheartening. They did a good job of capitalizing on our mistakes offensively. We made some poor pitches and they hit them, and they took advantage of a couple of defensive mental mistakes on our part. We just weren't very good tonight."

Samford was led offensively in the game by Jared Watson, driving in two runs in a 1-for-3 performance. Hunter Swilling hit his SoCon-leading 14th home run of the season, going 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Samford's Alex Ledford (6-4) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up six runs on 10 hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford. Jesse Travis, Devan Traglia and Mark Donham also saw time on the mound for Samford.

For The Citadel offensively, Bret Hines went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Connor Walsh went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Jacob Watcher went 2-for-4 with a double for The Citadel. James Reeves (6-3) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up two runs on three hits to earn the win for the visitors.

Samford took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning when Alex Lee singled to drive in Swilling for a 1-0 Samford lead.

The Citadel scored two runs in the second inning and one in the third to build a 3-1 lead. In the second inning, Hines hit a two-run double to give The Citadel the lead for good. In the third inning, Walsh scored on a wild pitch for a two-run lead.

Samford came back with a run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 3-2. Swilling hit a solo home run to center field to bring Samford to within one run.

The Citadel scored a run in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth to push its lead to 6-2. Austin Mapes drove in the run in the fourth inning. In the sixth inning, Walsh and Stephen Windham drove in a run each.

Samford came back with two runs in the seventh inning to cut The Citadel's lead to 6-4. Watson singled to drive in Swilling and Austin Edens to bring Samford to within two runs of The Citadel.

Samford, however, could get no closer as The Citadel pulled out the 6-4 win. With the loss, Samford drops to 24-20 overall and 10-6 in Southern Conference play. The Citadel improves to 19-25 overall and 4-12 in league play.
