CHARLESTON, S.C. – The second-seeded Samford baseball team plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn its second-straight walk-off win in the Southern Conference Tournament, downing third-seeded Wofford, 4-3 Friday morning.
With the win, Samford improves to 31-24, while Wofford drops to 37-21. Wofford will now play Furman Friday at 4 p.m. (CT) in an elimination game. The Furman-Wofford winner will take on Samford Saturday at 8 a.m. (CT).
Samford entered the bottom of the ninth inning trailing, 3-2.
Frankie Navarrete led the inning off with a double and then moved to second base on a double by
T.J. Dixon. Navarrete then scored on a wild pitch to knot the score at 3-3. With one out, Wofford intentionally walked
Heath Quinn and
Austin Edens to load the bases. After recording the second out of the inning, Wofford's Will Stillman walked
Brandon Powell to drive in Dixon for the walk-off, 4-3 Samford win.
"I'm really proud of our guys and their resiliency," Samford head coach
Casey Dunn said. "For our guys to answer back the way they did was huge. Frankie won the game yesterday and today he started the ninth with a big double. That says a lot about his heart and his character to come up big like that."
For Samford offensively, Navarrete went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Edens homered in the game for Samford, going 1-for-3 with one RBI. The home run was Edens' 14
th of the season and the 78
th for the Bulldogs so far this year.
Richard Greene and Powell drove in a run each for Samford.
Andres Gracia (4-0) pitched 2.0 innings, giving up three runs on four hits to pick up the win on the mound for Samford.
Parker Curry started the game and pitched 6.1 innings, allowing no runs on eight hits.
Mark Donham tossed two-thirds of an inning without allowing a hit.
Wofford was led offensively by Derek Hirsch, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Alec Paradowski and Carson Waln had two hits each for the Terriers. Pete Carrier also drove in a run for Wofford.
Will Stillman (1-1) pitched the final 1.2 inning, giving up two runs on two hits to take the loss on the mound for Wofford. Luke Leftwich pitched the first 7.0 innings, surrendering two runs on six hits. Leftwich struck out nine Samford batters without allowing a walk.
Samford got on the scoreboard first with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Powell led the inning off with a single and then moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by
Danny Rodriguez. Greene then singled to drive in Powell for a 1-0 Samford lead.
The Bulldogs added to their lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out in the inning, Edens hit a solo home run to right-center field to make the score 2-0.
Wofford grabbed the lead with three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Conor Clancey led the inning off with a double. With one out, Kody Ruedisili walked. Clancey then moved to third base on a fly out. Carrier then singled to drive in Clancey to make the score 2-1. Hirsch then singled to drive in Ruedisili and pinch-runner Matt Pelt for a 3-2 Wofford lead.
