Cross-Country Teams Prepped For Crimson Classic
10.12.16 | Cross Country
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University men's and women's cross-country teams will compete at the University of Alabama Crimson Classic on Friday, Oct. 14.
Â
Hosted at Tuscaloosa's Harry Pritchett Running Course, the meet signifies the Bulldogs' final racing opportunity prior to the Southern Conference Championships on Oct. 29.
Â
"This will be a good indication of where fitness is two weeks before the conference meet," Samford cross-country coach Pat McGregor said. "This is an important race, and I'd like to do really well."
Â
The Samford men will run an 8K at the Crimson Classic – their second of the season – while the Samford women will traverse their first 6K.
Â
McGregor said the 1,000-meter increase in distance from 5K to 6Kwill have a slight impact on racing strategy, but should minimally affect the group's overall performance.
Â
"I'm just concerned that they mentally handle the distance and don't get freaked out," McGregor said.
Â
The Bulldogs last raced on Oct. 1 at the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival in Fayetteville, Ark. At the meet, 13 of the team's 16 participating runners posted personal bests at their respective distances.
Â
Junior Arséne Guillorel led the Samford men with an 11th-place finish in the 8K race. His time of 24 minutes, 2.67 seconds bested his previous personal record by eight ticks.
Â
Sophomore Ben Bryant (24:37.56) and redshirt senior Brandon Hazouri (24:53.05) joined Guillorel among the contingent of runners who broke the 25-minute barrier.
Â
On the women's side, junior Karisa Nelson paced her team with a sixth-place finish in the 5K race. Her time of 16:38.99 lowered her previous personal best by more than 47 seconds.
Â
Nelson's teammate, junior Emma Garner, placed 12th in a personal-best 16:53.69.
Â
Notably, Guillorel and Nelson were named SoCon Runners of the Week for their impressive performances in Fayetteville. Â
Â
When his teams toe the starting line this Friday, McGregor said he'll be looking for them to build upon their established success.
Â
"If they do well, I think it can propel them into a great conference meet, but I think they just have to worry about right now and not worry about conference," McGregor said. "If they just worry about one step at a time, one play at a time and one revolution at a time, they'll do fine."
Â
The men's 8K race is slated to take off at 9 a.m. The women's 6K race will follow at 9:45 a.m.
