BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's basketball team will host the Memphis Tigers in the Bulldogs' home opener Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center.
Samford enters the game with a record of 0-1. The Bulldogs opened the season with a 62-57 loss at Georgia Tech Friday evening in Atlanta.
In the Georgia Tech game, Samford was led by
Hannah Nichols with 14 points.
Ellen Riggins scored 13 points,
Kassidy Blevins had 12 points and
Samantha Fitzgerald added 11 points. Fitzgerald led the team in rebounding with six, and
Brittany Stevens had a team-high four assists.
Memphis is currently 1-0 on the young season. The Tigers are coming off a 69-60 win over Missouri State Friday night.
Memphis was led in its season opener by Taylor Williams with 17 points, five rebounds and six assists. Cheyenne Creighton scored 16 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Brea Elmore and Taylor Barnes dished out four assists each in the Tigers' win.
Samford and Memphis will meet for the fourth time, with Samford holding a 2-1 advantage in the series. The teams last met on Nov. 16, 2014, with Samford falling by a score of 64-48. Samford won the first two meetings in the series. The Bulldogs defeated the Tigers, 62-54 on Nov. 17, 2006, and again by a score of 62-60 on Nov. 10, 2013. Sunday's game will mark the first time Memphis has played at Samford.
