BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Samford's
Wyatt Walker scored 16 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to a 66-53 win at Campbell Monday night at Gore Arena.
With the win, Samford improves to 2-1, while Campbell falls to 1-3 with the loss.
Walker made 5-of-9 shots from the floor and 6-of-10 from the free-throw line for his game-high total. Following Walker for Samford,
Demetrius Denzel-Dyson scored 13 points, while
Christen Cunningham added 10 points.
Justin Hopkins pulled down nine rebounds to go along with his five points.
For Campbell, Chris Clemons led the way with a game-high 23 points. Marcus Burk had 10 points, while Shane Whitfield added eight points for the Camels.
The game was tight through most of the first half. With Samford leading, 20-18, the Bulldogs closed the first half with a 9-0 run to take a 29-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, Campbell started the period with a 9-3 run to cut the Samford lead to five points at 32-27 with 16:35 to go after a three-pointer by Clemons. The Camels cut the lead to just two points at 36-34 with 12:37 left after a three-pointer by Burk.
Samford, however, answered with a 15-4 run to push its lead back out to 13 points at 51-38 with 7:26 to go after a jumper by
Alex Thompson. Samford extended its lead to as many as 16 points at 57-41 with 5:14 to go. The Camels fought back to cut the lead to eight points at 61-53, but they could get no closer as Samford came away with the 66-53 win.
As a team, Samford outrebounded Campbell, 49-34. The Bulldogs shot 38.2 percent from the floor, compared to 30.6 percent for the Camels.
Samford will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 23, when the Bulldogs play at Cincinnati at 6 p.m. (CT). Samford's first home game of the season will be Saturday, Nov. 26, when the team hosts Bethune-Cookman as part of the San Diego State Classic at 7 p.m.
