FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Samford women's basketball team will travel to Fort Myers, Florida, to compete in the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic, Thursday and Friday at Alico Arena.
Samford will open the tournament by taking on UC Riverside Thursday at 3 p.m. (CT). The Bulldogs will then play Hampton Friday at 3 p.m. (CT). The games will mark Samford's first-ever meeting with both programs.
Samford comes into the tournament with a record of 6-6. The Bulldogs are coming off a 65-59 win at Georgia on Dec. 22.
For the season, Samford is led in scoring by
Hannah Nichols, averaging 14.0 points per game.
Kassidy Blevins is scoring 12.8 points per game so far this season for the Bulldogs.
Samantha Fitzgerald and
Ellen Riggins are tied for the team lead in rebounding, each grabbing 4.4 boards per contest.
Brittany Stevens leads the squad in assists, dishing out 3.3 assists per game.
UC Riverside is currently 5-5 coming into this week's event. UCR is coming off a 90-84 overtime loss at Kansas on Dec. 21.
The Highlanders are led by Rejane Verin, scoring 16.9 points, grabbing 7.7 rebounds and dishing out 4.1 assists per game. Simone DeCloud averages 15.2 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game for UC Riverside.
Hampton has a record of 5-6 entering this week's tournament. The Pirates are coming off a 61-58 loss at Old Dominion on Dec. 18.
Hampton is led in scoring by Malia Tate-Defreitas, averaging 17.0 points per game. Kaylah Lupoe leads the team in rebounding, grabbing 7.5 boards per contest. Tate-Defreitas is also the team leader in assists, dishing out 3.6 assists per game.
