BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team only surrendered two runs on three hits Tuesday as the Bulldogs sent seven different pitchers to the mound in a 13-2 home victory against the UAB Blazers in a rain-shortened, seven-inning contest held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

"I thought this was a very encouraging game," said Samford head coach Casey Dunn. "I thought that all of our guys threw well and we only allowed two runs and obviously they both came on solo home runs. I was definitely pleased with the effort of our staff."

Samford (6-3) scored its 13 runs on 13 hits Tuesday and was bolstered at the plate by sophomore Austin Edens' 3-for-5 performance. Edens, the Bulldogs' powerful right-handed designated hitter from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, finished the game with four RBI and sent a pair of long home run balls over the left-field fence. Edens also singled and scored a run in the first inning to set the pace for Samford.

"Austin was feeling it a little bit out here today," Dunn said. "Late in the game, instead of hitting one 400 feet, he tried to hit one 600 feet and ended up striking out there, but we did some really good things as a team. The one thing that I didn't like was that we struck out nine times in only six innings of play and that's a little frustrating. When we get in close games, we'll have to put the ball in play better that that."

Additionally, the Bulldogs' Frankie Navarrete turned in a 3-for-4 outing and scored a pair of runs. Junior Heath Quinn and senior Danny Rodriguez both registered two-hit performances, while Hunter Swilling, Jared Watson and Richard Greene all tallied base hits.

Quinn and Greene both drove in a pair of runs Tuesday and rifled line-drive doubles down the left-field line. Quinn, Samford's Preseason All-American from Birmingham, moved his batting average to .512 on the season, while Greene is now hitting .419 on the year.

The Bulldogs' Stephen Jones (1-0) started the game on the mound and only faced three Blazer hitters as he retired the side in the first inning.

Samford pitched a different arm in each inning Tuesday as Tanner Cunningham, Jake Greer and Josh Rich all finished with perfectly clean slates. The Bulldogs' Caleb Maggio, Jack Rude and Alex Lee only allowed a single hit apiece.

UAB (3-5) scored both of its runs on solo homers. The Blazers' Evan Peterson broke up Samford's no-hit bid in the top of the fourth inning, while senior Esteban Tresgallo notched his first round-tripper of the season in the seventh.

With a dangerous rainstorm looming Tuesday evening, both head coaches agreed to play only seven innings for a complete game.

The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Friday at 6 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs begin their first road series of the season against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks. The three-game road set will be held at ULM's Warhawk Field (1,800).

"Louisiana-Monroe is definitely a solid club and I think it's going to be a good series down there," said Dunn. "We need to get on the road. We've been home for two weeks and now we'll go play two straight weekends on the road, so I think it's time to get used to that atmosphere. I've heard that ULM has a really good stadium with great fans and it should be a fun weekend of baseball."
