MONROE, La. -- In its first road game of the 2016 campaign, Samford surrendered four key runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and couldn't overcome the early deficit en route to a 5-2 setback against the ULM Warhawks in the opening foray of a three-game series to be held at Warhawk Field.

Samford (6-4) jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the top of the third inning behind a sacrifice fly from Hunter Swilling, who drove in senior Frankie Navarrete from third base for the game-opening run. Navarrete started the rally with a single up the middle, while junior T.J. Dixon pushed him into scoring position with a double to center field.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, ULM (5-4) broke the game open with four runs and the Warhawks' rally was definitely aided by some Bulldog miscues.

ULM registered two hits in the frame, but Samford also committed a pair of costly errors and tallied a wild pitch in the inning. The Bulldogs also walked a pair of hitters in the fourth as well.

The Warhawks' top hitter Friday proved to be catcher Spencer Hemphill, who finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Third baseman Josh Faciane added a 1-for-3 performance, while driving in a pair of runs.

Samford's top hitter against ULM in the series opener was senior catcher Richard Greene with a 2-for-4 outing. Greene, the Bulldogs' talented native of Birmingham, Alabama, improved his batting average on the season to .438.

Along with Navarrete, Dixon and Greene, Samford's Austin Edens, Alex Lee and Jared Watson also registered base hits Friday.

The Bulldogs scored their second run of the game in the top of the sixth inning as Lee singled up the middle to open the frame and then Greene doubled him home with a laser down the left-field line. Greene, one of the nation's leaders in doubles this season, has already accumulated seven two-baggers this year.

ULM tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the final score of the contest, 5-2.

Samford outhit the Warhawks, 7-6, but committed two errors and finished with eight runners left on base.

The Bulldogs' weekend series at ULM will resume Saturday at 6 p.m. (CST) as they look to even the three-game set at 1-1 with a key victory to be held at Warhawk Field. Samford's Tristan Widra (1-0) is scheduled to get the start on the mound.
