Updated StatsBIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team sent eight pitchers to the mound, walked seven Jacksonville Dolphin hitters and committed three errors in a 7-2 setback Saturday held at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The Bulldogs and Jacksonville are now tied at 1-1 in the weekend series and will play the rubber game Sunday at 1 p.m. (CDT).
"This was just a bad game all around," said Samford head coach
Casey Dunn. "I don't think we did anything well all day, from the time we showed up until now well after the game is over. It was not a good effort all the way around and it was very disappointing."
Samford (11-8) suffered just its fourth home loss of the season Saturday and its most recent since Feb. 27. The Bulldogs' previous three home defeats occurred against a really good BYU squad in a four-game set earlier this season.
Jacksonville (12-6) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning and took a quick 1-0 advantage as Austin Hays singled and later crossed the plate when Sam Armstrong sent a scooting base hit through the right side of the infield.
Hays, who is batting .410 for the Dolphins this season, finished the game 1-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Armstrong, Jacksonville's sophomore third baseman from Ocala, Florida, tallied a 2-for-5 performance at the dish with a pair of RBI.
The Dolphins' Angel Camacho earned the start at first base Saturday and finished the day with two runs scored and an RBI, while going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Despite falling behind early, Samford bounced back with two runs of its own in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 advantage in the game. During the Bulldogs' rally,
Danny Rodriguez drew a walk and scored from second base on a single up the middle from
T.J. Dixon.
Samford's
Frankie Navarrete, who singled to left field with two outs in the frame, later scored as right fielder
Heath Quinn drew a bases-loaded walk to garner a 2-1 advantage.
The Bulldogs' Dixon,
Austin Edens,
Richard Greene and Navarrete all tallied two-hit performances Saturday, while
Alex Lee and
Jared Watson notched base hits.
Following Samford's two-run stanza in the second, Jacksonville closed out the game with six unanswered scores. The Dolphins added one in the third, two in the fourth, one more in the fifth before tacking on a pair in the top of the seventh to make the final score 7-2.
"We didn't show up today," said Dunn. "Physically, we're here, but that's about all we did. Just showing up is not enough. Days like today is what's made this year a little bit disappointing, because this team has the ability to be better. We have the capability to play better than we've played and our record should be better than it is. We need to make sure that we show up every day ready to go."
In Friday's 8-5 victory over Jacksonville, the Bulldogs' Dunn notched the 350
th win of his collegiate coaching career.
Samford's
Tristan Widra (2-1) started Saturday's game and struck out four batters in three innings. The Bulldogs' native of Hoover allowed two earned runs on four hits.
Widra was replaced by
Wyatt Burns in the fourth inning, who was the first of seven relievers to enter the game. Samford's
Mikhail Cazenave,
Josh Rich,
Cody Shelton,
Connor Burns,
Stephen Jones and
Caleb Maggio also made appearances.
Jacksonville starter Nathan Disch (3-1) only struck out one Bulldog, but hurled 6.2 innings Saturday on only a total of 93 pitches.
"We gave away a lot of at-bats today," said Dunn. "There were eight times today that we swung at the first pitch of an at-bat and made an out. They had their bullpen up in the third or fourth inning, but then their starter ended up pitching all the way until the seventh. I wish I could sit here and find some positives from this game, but it's tough right now."
Samford's three-game home series against Jacksonville University will conclude Sunday at 1 p.m. (CDT) with the final contest of the weekend to be held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
