WBB To Take On Wofford In SoCon Quarters Thursday

ASHEVILLE, N.C.—
The third-seeded Samford women's basketball team will open play in the 2016 Southern Conference Tournament by taking on sixth-seeded Wofford Thursday at 5:15 p.m. (CT) at the U.S. Cellular Center.
 
The winner of the Samford-Wofford game will advance to play either Chattanooga or Western Carolina in the tournament semifinals Friday at 12:15 p.m. (CT). The tournament championship game will be played Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT). The tournament champion will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
 
All Samford games in the tournament can be heard locally on WVSU-FM 91.1 or worldwide on the internet at www.samford.edu/wvsu. Every tournament game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
 
Since joining the Southern Conference for the 2008-09 season, Samford is 10-5 in SoCon Tournament games. The Bulldogs won back-to-back tournament titles in 2011 and 2012.
 
Samford enters the game with a record of 19-10 overall and 11-3 in SoCon play. The Bulldogs are coming off a 50-48 win over Wofford on Feb. 27.
 
Destiney Elliott and Taylor Reece, who were both named second team All-SoCon earlier this week, share the team lead in scoring at 9.1 points per game. Elliott leads the team in rebounding, averaging 7.3 boards per game.        
 
Amara Mayers and Krista Stricklin are tied for second on the team in rebounding at 3.7 rebounds per game.
 
Brittany Stevens leads the team in assists at 2.5 assists per game. Elliott averages 1.8 assists per game.
 
Wofford comes into the contest with a record of 9-19 overall and 3-11 in SoCon games, following Saturday's loss at Samford.
         
Kentra Washington leads Wofford in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game. Jordan Frazier averages 8.2 points per game for the Terriers.
         
Ashton Fleming leads Wofford in rebounding, grabbing 6.7 boards per contest. Washington averages 6.0 rebounds per game.
         
Chanel Stokes leads Wofford in assists, averaging 1.9 per game. Frazier averages 1.7 assists per game.
 
Samford and Wofford are meeting for the 21st time, with the Bulldogs holding an 18-2 advantage in the series. The teams met twice this season, with Samford winning both meetings. SU earned a 58-39 win on Jan. 30 in Spartanburg, S.C., and the Bulldogs defeated the Terriers, 50-48 on Feb. 27 in Birmingham.
 
The teams have met once previously in the SoCon Tournament. Samford defeated Wofford, 59-55, in the first round of the 2013 event.
