MONROE, La. -- The Samford University baseball team scored five quick runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back Saturday as the Bulldogs tallied a 10-2 road victory against the ULM Warhawks in a resounding, series-tying triumph held at Warhawk Field.

Samford (7-4) received five strong innings on the mound from sophomore starter Tristan Widra (2-0), who recorded seven strikeouts en route to his second victory of the season. Widra, the Bulldogs' talented native of Hoover, Alabama, only allowed one run on four hits and set Samford up nicely for the win.

The Bulldogs rattled off 14 hits Saturday and scored 10 runs, while not committing a single error. Already this season, Samford has tallied double-digit runs in six of its 11 games. As a team, the Bulldogs are batting .332 this season and have outscored their opponents by 51 runs, 89-38.

In the top of the first inning, Samford exploded for five runs on three hits, including a huge three-run homer from junior Heath Quinn.

Junior T.J. Dixon walked to start the game and then advanced to second base as Hunter Swilling singled to center field. Swilling, the Bulldogs' Preseason All-American third baseman from Columbus, Georgia, finished Saturday's contest 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored.

Next up, Samford's Quinn blasted his nation-leading eighth home run of the season deep to left field.

The Bulldogs later added two more runs in the inning on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Frankie Navarrete.

ULM (5-5) starting pitcher Brandon Bell didn't retire a single batter Saturday and finished his outing allowing five earned runs, three hits and three bases on balls in six batters faced.

The Warhawks tallied their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning as first baseman Danny Springer connected on a solo home run.

Samford added two more scores in the top of the fourth inning and one more in the eighth inning to make the score 10-1. The Bulldogs' Swilling and Edens both finished the game with three hits apiece, while Alex Lee, Jared Watson and Danny Rodriguez all tallied two-hit performances against ULM.

Samford had at least one player reach base in every inning of the game and sent 41 hitters to the plate.

Also pitching for the Bulldogs on Saturday were Josh Rich and Cody Shelton. Rich came on in the sixth inning and hurled three full innings of solid baseball, while Shelton demoralized the Warhawks in the ninth frame by retiring the side in 12 pitches.

The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Sunday at 1 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs conclude their three-game road series against the ULM Warhawks with a key rubber-game matchup to be held at Warhawk Field.
