Bulldogs and Paladins Set For SoCon Showdown

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University softball team sets off for its third Southern Conference series of the season and second on the road as the Bulldogs will take on the Furman University Paladins on April 9-10, at Pepsi Field.

Series At A Glance
  •  Furman holds the all-time series lead over Samford with a 27-16 record.
  •  The Bulldogs won the regular series last season at home 2-1 (4-2, 1-0, 9-11) but fell to the Paladins 6-3 at the SoCon Tournament in an elimination game.
  •  Samford has never won a three-game series on the road at Furman.
 
News, Notes & Nuggets
  •  Samford swept the Southern Conference Pitcher & Player of the Week awards for the second-consecutive week as redshirt-senior pitcher Mollie Hanson and  senior outfielder Megan Dowdy claimed the awards this week. The last time a program captured the awards in back-to-back weeks was in 2004 when the  College of Charleston swept the weeks of February 24 & March 3.
  •  The Bulldogs are off to their best start ever in Southern Conference play as the team sits in first place with a 6-0 record and a two-game lead over Western  Carolina heading into the weekend.
  •  Dowdy and sophomore Shelby Maze have provided a potent one-two punch in the top of the lineup for the Bulldogs over the last couple of weeks. Dowdy is  currently riding a 12-game hit streak while Maze follows closely behind with a 10-game hit streak of her own.
  •  Furman is coming off of a midweek split against Charlotte at home inside Pepsi Stadium. The Paladins took the first game of the doubleheader 6-1 but dropped  the nightcap to the 49ers 4-0.
  •  The Paladins boast six bats in the lineup that hit over .300 so far on the season with Anna Rose Borrelli leading the way with a .368 average and team leading  nine home runs and 34 RBIs.
 
Around The SoCon
  •  Chattanooga heads to Cullowhee, N.C. to take on the second-place Western Carolina Catamounts. The Mocs were swept 3-0 last weekend by the Bulldogs for  the first-ever in a three-game series.
  •  ETSU has a bye week from SoCon action and will take on South Carolina State in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 10, at home.
  •  UNCG and Mercer will square off this weekend in Greensboro, N.C. in a SoCon showdown. Both the Spartans and the Bears have already taken their off-week  from Southern Conference action.
