CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Samford University basketball team used a multitude of top-notch offensive performances Saturday to roll past The Citadel Bulldogs, 98-90, in a pivotal Southern Conference contest held at McAlister Fieldhouse.

Samford finished with six players scoring in double figures Saturday and junior point guard
Christen Cunningham added six points en route to becoming the 27
th player in school history to reach the prestigious 1,000-point plateau.

Cunningham, who is also on pace to set both the single-season and career assists records this season, has already scored 1,001 points in his career.

Demetrius Denzel-Dyson led all scorers with 21 points, while he also pulled down seven huge rebounds and drained six straight free throws down the stretch to ice the victory. Denzel-Dyson also drained a trio of 3-point baskets in the win.

Josh Sharkey registered his best performance at Samford on Saturday as he exploded for a career-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. The Bulldogs' speedy point guard from Philadelphia also added five assists, two steals and a pair of boards.

Triston Chambers turned in a brilliant second half against The Citadel and finished the contest with 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.

As a team, Samford notched a 10-of-21 outing from 3-point range, while Chambers,
Alex Thompson and Denzel-Dyson combined to make all 10 shot from deep. The Bulldogs' Thompson connected on three 3-point baskets and dropped in 11 points Saturday.

Wyatt Walker recorded his 11
th double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The reigning SoCon Player of the Week entered the game ranked sixth in the nation in both double-doubles and total rebounds.

Samford freshman
Justin Hopkins turned in his best outing of the season against The Citadel. The Bulldogs' up-and-coming native of Huntsville, Alabama, scored 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting from the floor in 21 minutes of playing time. He also pulled down four rebounds in the triumph.

The Citadel was limited to a 39.5 shooting percentage from the field, while Samford posted a season-high shooting total of 63.5 percent. The Citadel forced Samford into 23 turnovers and outscored the Bulldogs 26-8 in points off turnovers.

The Samford University basketball team will next be in action Jan. 21, at 4 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs conclude their brief two-game road stretch with a highly-anticipated showdown against defending champion and preseason-favorite pick Chattanooga to be held at The McKenzie Arena in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee.
