Women's Basketball Drops SoCon Road Game At UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. –
The Samford women's basketball team fell at UNCG, 64-40, Saturday afternoon in Southern Conference action at Fleming Gymnasium.
 
Samford committed 22 turnovers in the loss. The Bulldogs shot just 35 percent from the floor in the game, while UNCG hit 51 percent of its shots. Samford made just 21 percent of its three-pointers, compared to 38 percent for UNCG from beyond the arc. UNCG out-rebounded Samford, 30-21.
 
"UNCG played hard and they are athletic at every position," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "I just think our approach and how we handled it was not good. We were throwing the ball all over the place, and we haven't really done that at all in that kind of setting all year. We have a lot of work to do, as coaches and as players."
 
Samford was led in the loss by freshman Katie Allen with 11 points. Senior Brittany Stevens scored eight points, while senior Lydia McGee added six points for the Bulldogs.
 
For UNCG in the game, Shanese Harris led the way with 14 points. Nadine Soliman scored 13 points, Bailey Williams had 11 points and Te'ja Twitty added 10 points for the Spartans.
 
UNCG started the first quarter with an 8-2 run to take the early six-point lead. Samford fought back to cut the lead to two points at 13-11 with 55 seconds to go in the quarter after a jumper by McGee. UNCG led, 16-11 at the end of the first quarter.
 
In the second quarter, UNCG pushed its lead out to nine points at 20-11 with 8:04 left in the period after a basket by Harris. Samford then went on a 12-4 run to cut the lead to just one point at 24-23 with 1:50 left before halftime after a layup by Allen. UNCG scored six of the last seven points of the quarter to take a 30-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
 
UNCG started the third quarter on an 8-1 run to push its lead out to 13 points at 38-25 with 5:17 left in the quarter after a basket by Harris. Samford cut the lead to eight points at 38-30 with 3:46 left in the period after a layup by Allen. UNCG scored the next four points to push the lead back out to 12 points at 42-30. UNCG held a 46-33 advantage after three quarters.
 
In the fourth quarter, UNCG led by as many as 26 points at 64-38 with 1:35 to go in the contest. A late basket by Charity Brown made the final score 64-40.
 
With the loss, Samford drops to 7-11 overall and 1-3 in Southern Conference play. UNCG improves to 10-9 overall and 1-3 in league games. The game marks UNCG's first conference win since 2015.
