BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's basketball team will open Southern Conference play by hosting defending league champion Chattanooga Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center.

Samford comes into the game with an overall record of 6-8. The Bulldogs dropped two decisions in last week's Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic, falling to UC Riverside, 51-48, and to Hampton, 63-57.
In the loss to Hampton, Samford junior guard
Hannah Nichols scored a career-high 29 points and tied a school record by making seven three-pointers. For the season, Nichols leads the team, averaging 15.4 points per game. Fellow junior
Kassidy Blevins is averaging 12.3 points per game.
Freshman
Samantha Fitzgerald is the team leader in rebounding, grabbing 4.3 boards per contest. Senior
Ellen Riggins averages 4.2 rebounds per game.
Senior point guard
Brittany Stevens leads the team in assists, dishing out 3.1 assists per game. Freshman
Charity Brown averages 2.6 assists per game.
Chattanooga comes into Wednesday night's game with a record of 6-8. The Mocs are coming off a 56-48 win over Presbyterian on Dec. 30.
UTC has four players scoring in double figures so far this season. Queen Alford (11.1 pg.), Jasmine Joyner (10.8), Chelsey Shumpert (10.1) and Lakelyn Bouldin (10.0) lead the Mocs in scoring.
Joyner is the team leader in rebounding, grabbing 9.4 boards per contest. Keiana Gilbert averages 5.1 rebounds per game.
Gilbert also leads the team in assists, dishing out 2.9 assists per game. Shumpert averages 2.8 assists per game for Chattanooga.
Samford and Chattanooga will be meeting for the 26th time, with Chattanooga holding an 18-7 advantage in the series. Last season, the teams split the regular-season series, with each team winning at home. Chattanooga then claimed a 49-41 win in the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament. Samford has a record of 5-6 against the Mocs in Birmingham, the team is 2-10 in games played in Chattanooga, and 0-2 against UTC at neutral sites.
