BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University volleyball team dropped the first set Wednesday at home against the Mercer Bears, 25-21, but then rallied back to win the next three stanzas, 25-19, 26-24 and 25-22, to earn a hard-fought 3-1 Southern Conference triumph in front of a raucous crowd at the Pete Hanna Center.
 
With the win, Samford (9-12, 4-3 SoCon) improved to 2-1 at home against conference opponents. The Bulldogs will next be in action Saturday at 7 p.m. (CT) as they play host to the first-place Furman Paladins in a highly-anticipated SoCon showdown.
 
Mercer (7-12, 2-5 SoCon) suffered its third straight defeat and dropped to 1-7 in true road matches this season.
 
All-time, Samford owns a 27-7 record against the Bears.
 
The Bulldogs used some key lineup changes in Wednesday's victory as true freshman Corinne Meglic competed as the team's lead setter. Samford's talented 5-foot-10 native of Green Bay, Wisconsin, registered a match-high 54 assists and added 10 digs for a double-double. Meglic also posted a pair of block assists.
 
Junior Taylor Anderton, who entered the match ranked No. 21 in the nation in assists, moved to an attacking role Wednesday and finished with nine kills and 13 digs.
 
Samford's Krista Boesing led the way with 21 kills, while sophomore Kelsi Hobbs added 14. The Bulldogs' Grace Tiesman notched a match-high 34 digs.
 
Samford's Boesing entered the contest ranked No. 7 in the nation in total kills and No. 11 in points. Already this season, Boesing has compiled 344 kills. As a team, the Bulldogs are ranked in the top 50 in the nation in assists (No. 36 – 918), service aces (No. 45 – 105), kills (No. 47 – 959) and digs (No. 48 – 1,177).
 
The Samford University volleyball team will next be in action Saturday at 7 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs square off against the first-place Furman Paladins in a huge SoCon showdown to be held at the Pete Hanna Center.
