BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University volleyball team received double-digit kill performances from Shayla Phillip, Krista Boesing and Kelsi Hobbs on Saturday, but the Bulldogs' late third-set comeback attempt was thwarted by the first-place Furman Paladins who earned a 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 26-24) Southern Conference victory held at the Pete Hanna Center.

With its loss, Samford (9-13, 4-4 SoCon) moved to 3-5 when playing at home this season. The Bulldogs will next be in action Friday at 4 p.m. (CT) as they begin a key two-match SoCon road swing against the Wofford Terriers. Just three weeks ago, Samford earned a pivotal 3-1 home victory over Wofford.

Furman (14-7, 8-0 SoCon) extended its winning streak to eight straight matches Saturday and remained undefeated in conference play this season. The Paladins are the lone undefeated team remaining in league action.

Earlier this week, Furman downed The Citadel, 3-1, in a midweek contest in Charleston, South Carolina, before defeating Mercer on the road in Macon, Georgia, on Friday, 3-0.

Samford's Boesing led with 11 kills Saturday, while Phillip and Hobbs both followed with 10 apiece. Phillip, the Bulldogs' talented sophomore from Columbus, South Carolina, turned in a brilliant .389 hitting percentage to lead the team.

For the second straight match, Samford true freshman Corinne Meglic played in the team's primary setter role and finished with a game-high 35 assists. Hobbs posted the squad's lone double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore Grace Tiesman registered a team-high 13 digs as senior Morgan St. Germain added 10.

Furman's Courtney Hoffman led a balanced attack for the Paladins with 10 kills. Hunter Thompson tallied 29 assists in the contest, while Jamila Johnson accumulated a match-high 15 digs.

The Samford University volleyball team will next be in action Friday at 4 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs begin a two-match weekend road trip against the Wofford Terriers. The contest will be held at Wofford's Richardson Indoor Stadium in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
