BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University volleyball team started strong against the UNCG Spartans on Friday and won the first two sets, 25-21 and 27-25, but then the Spartans charged back to take the next three stanzas, 25-15, 25-21 and 15-11, to earn the 3-2 five-set win in Southern Conference play held at the Pete Hanna Center.
 
With the loss, Samford (10-15, 5-6 SoCon) dropped to 3-6 when competing at home this season. The Bulldogs will look to end that trend Saturday at 7 p.m. (CT) as they welcome in the Western Carolina Catamounts for another key conference matchup.
 
Earlier this season, on Sept. 29, Samford earned a 3-0 road victory over the Catamounts held in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
 
UNCG (13-10, 6-5 SoCon) notched its second straight 3-2 win Friday and its fourth of the 2017 campaign. On Saturday, the Spartans tallied a hard-fought, five-set triumph at home against Chattanooga.
 
With three double-digit kill performers, UNCG used a balanced attack versus Samford. All-SoCon standout Ashley Muench led the way with 13 kills and 10 digs, while Holly Behrends followed with 12 kills and Annchara Montgomery added 11.
 
The Spartans' Allison Penner notched 52 assists in the game. Anna Romaniszyn earned a match-high 17 digs.
 
Samford's Kelsi Hobbs led all competitors with 18 kills on 45 total attacks, while Krista Boesing followed closely with 16. Junior setter Taylor Anderton handed out 49 assists in the contest as sophomore defensive specialist Grace Tiesman accumulated 14 digs.
 
The Samford University volleyball team will next be in action Saturday at 7 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs continue play in its four-match homestand against the Western Carolina Catamounts. The contest will be held at the Pete Hanna Center.
