CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- In a hard-fought, back-and-forth contest held at the Ramsey Center on Friday, the Samford University volleyball team suffered a heart-wrenching 3-2 (25-18, 22-25, 20-25, 25-23, 11-15) loss against the Wofford Terriers in the quarterfinal round of the 2017 Southern Conference Tournament being hosted on the campus of Western Carolina University.

Friday's match, which featured the No. 4-seed
Wofford (21-10) and No. 5-seed
Samford (13-18), encompassed 29 ties and eight lead changes. The thrilling seesaw battle included 133 total kills, 165 digs, eight service aces and 16 blocks.

With their win, the Terriers advanced to Saturday's semifinal-round contest where they will face either No. 1 seed Furman or No. 8 seed Mercer at 1 p.m. (CT).

Samford won the first set against Wofford on Friday by a score of 25-18. The Bulldogs then played the Terriers close in sets two and three, but suffered back-to-back losses of 25-22 and 25-20.

In the fourth set, Samford found itself trailing midway through the frame before rallying back for a tremendous 25-23 triumph to force the fifth-and-final stanza of the contest.

Both teams battled hard in the fifth set, but Wofford was able to string together a run late in the frame to garner a 15-11 victory.

With their win, the Terriers finished 2-1 against Samford on the season.

The Bulldogs' Kelsi Hobbs turned in a brilliant match Friday. Samford's talented sophomore outside hitter from Hoover, Alabama, finished with 23 kills and 12 digs, while earning a .293 hitting percentage. She also added a pair of service aces in the matchup.

Junior outside hitter
Krista Boesing compiled 20 kills against Wofford and finished the season with a total of 501 on the year for an average of 4.11 kills per set. Sophomore
Shayla Phillip added 14 key kills for the Bulldogs, while junior setter
Taylor Anderton tallied 55 assists in the contest.

Samford finished the match with five players registering double-digit digs. Sophomore Grace Tiesman led the way with 17, while senior
Morgan St. Germain tallied 13 and Hobbs added 12. Anderton also posted a double-double Friday with 10 digs to go along with her 55 assists.
