NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Samford women's basketball team dropped an 83-46 decision at Belmont Tuesday evening at the Curb Event Center.
With the loss, Samford fall to 2-3 on the young season. Belmont improves to 3-1 with the win.
Samford was led in the game by Hannah Nichols with 11 points. Samantha Fitzgerald scored nine points and grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
For Belmont, Kylee Smith led the way with 18 points. Maura Muensterman scored 12 points, while Darby Maggard had 11 points and seven assists. Sally McCabe scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
The game was close early until, with Belmont leading, 10-8, the Bruins went on an 8-0 run to take an 18-8 lead with 2:18 to go in the first quarter after a free throw by Ellie Harmeyer. After Makaila Woolard ended the run with a free throw to cut the lead to 18-9, Belmont scored the final six points of the quarter to hold a 24-9 lead at the end of the first period.
Belmont opened the second quarter with a 10-2 run to push its lead to 34-11 with 6:41 to go in the quarter after a jumper by Smith. The Bruins pushed their lead to as many as 31 points in the quarter and took a 48-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the third quarter, Belmont extended its lead to 38 points at 64-26 with 3:26 left in the period. The Bruins held a 67-34 advantage after three quarters.
Samford could get no closer than 30 points in the fourth quarter, and Belmont came away with the 83-46 victory.
As a team, Samford shot 31 percent from the floor, while Belmont made 51 percent of its shots. Belmont outrebounded Samford, 51-21.
Samford will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 26, when the Bulldogs play at Florida State. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. (CT) start from Tallahassee, Florida.
