RUSTON, La. – The Samford softball team dropped a pair of one-run games on day one of the Louisiana Tech Invitational Friday at the Louisiana Tech Softball Complex. In the first game, the Bulldogs fell to North Dakota, 4-3. In game two, Arkansas-Pine Bluff defeated Samford, 8-7 in eight innings.
In game one, Samford was led at the plate by
Whitney Hinton, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Madison Couch went 2-for-2 with a double, while
Lauren Lewis had a 2-for-4 performance.
Abbie Miranda and
Kelsey Royalty had an RBI each for the Bulldogs.
Jessica Stone (0-1) pitched 2.0 innings in relief, giving up two runs on four hits in taking the loss in the circle.
Grey Adams started the game for Samford, tossing 5.0 innings, giving up two runs, while striking out eight batters.
For North Dakota, Maddy Clowdus drove in two runs, while Dani Romero and Mary Martin drove in a run each. Hannah Bergh (1-0) pitched 2.0 scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win for North Dakota.
After North Dakota took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning, Samford came back with three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead. North Dakota plated a run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 3-2. The Fighting Hawks then took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the seventh inning to earn the 4-3 victory.
In game two, the teams went into extra innings knotted at 4-4. Samford plated three runs in the top of the eighth to take a 7-4 lead. UAPB, however, answered with four runs in the bottom of the eighth for the 8-7 win. Maria Aguila scored the game-winning run for the Lions on a Samford error.
For Samford in game two, Couch went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Miranda went 2-for-5 with a double and four RBI.
Shelby Maze also had two hits and an RBI for the Bulldogs in game two.
Adams (0-1) started game two in the circle as well for the Bulldogs. She pitched 7.1 innings, giving up eight runs, just four earned, on seven hits in taking the loss.
Taylor DeCelles also pitched a third of an inning for Samford in the game.
Paige Garcia led Arkansas-Pine Bluff, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI. Tonnay Hawki also went 2-for-4 for the Lions. Karia Beth Hall (1-0) pitched 8.0 innings, surrendering seven runs, three earned, on eight hits to pick up the win.
UAPB struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Samford came back to take the lead with four runs in the top of the third inning. The Lions knotted the score at 4-4 with two runs in bottom of the fourth inning. Neither team was able to score again until the deciding eighth inning.
With the losses, Samford is now 0-2 on the young season. Both North Dakota and UAPB are now 1-0. On Saturday, Samford will take on Missouri State at 3 p.m. at Incarnate Word at 7 p.m.
