SAMFORD VS. INCARNATE WORD BOX SCORE
RUSTON, La. – The Samford softball team split its two games on the second day of the Louisiana Tech Invitational Saturday at the Louisiana Tech Softball Complex. The Bulldogs defeated Missouri State, 10-1 in five innings, and they fell to Incarnate Word, 3-2 in the final game of the day.
In the 10-1 win over Missouri State, Samford was led by
Lexie Higgins, going 2-for-3 with two home runs, including a grand slam, and five RBI.
Abbie Miranda also homered, going 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Hannah Trombley went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while
Shelby Maze was 2-for-3 at the plate.
Taylor DeCelles pitched the complete 5.0 innings, giving up just one run on eight hits to pick up the win. The victory was the first of the year for DeCelles.
For Missouri State, Mary Stephens drove in the team's lone run, going 1-for-2 at the plate. Holly Kelley pitched 4.0 innings, giving up eight runs on nine hits to take the loss in the circle for the Bears.
Samford jumped on top early and never looked back on its way to the nine-run win. In the top of the first inning, the Bulldogs plated five runs, four coming on Higgins' grand slam to take the early 5-0 lead. Missouri State plated its lone run of the contest in the bottom of the first inning to cut the Samford lead to 5-1.
The Bulldogs plated three more runs in the top of the fourth inning, all on a home run by Miranda, to make the score 8-1. Samford added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, one coming on Higgins' second homer of the contest, to make the final score 10-1.
In the 3-2 loss to Incarnate Word,
Abby Sweeney led Samford, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Maze went 2-for-4 in game two for Samford.
Jessica Stone (0-2) took the loss in the circle for the Bulldogs, tossing the complete 7.0 innings, giving up three unearned runs on four hits.
Incarnate Word was led at the plate by Bailey Thomas, going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Joanna Valencia (1-0) earned the win, pitching 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on eight hits.
Samford took the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Both runs were scored on a single by Sweeney to give Samford a 2-0 lead.
Incarnate Word came back with three runs in the third inning to take a 3-2 lead. All three of the runs were unearned as Samford committed two errors in the inning.
With the split, Samford's record moves to 1-3 on the young season.
Samford will wrap up play in the Louisiana Tech Invitational by taking on the host team, Louisiana Tech Sunday afternoon. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
