TROY, Ala. – The Samford softball team will continue its 2017 season by competing in the Trojan Classic, hosted by Troy University, Friday through Sunday.
On Friday's opening day, Samford will take on Jacksonville at 10 a.m., followed by a matchup with Longwood at 12:30 p.m. Samford will open Saturday's competition against Jacksonville at 12:30 p.m., and the Bulldogs will then play the host, Troy at 5:30 p.m. On Sunday's final day, Samford will take on Longwood at 10 a.m.
Samford enters the weekend with a record of 1-4. The Bulldogs opened the 2017 season last weekend at the Louisiana Tech Invitational. In that tournament, Samford earned a 10-1 win over Missouri State, and suffered setbacks against North Dakota (4-3), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (8-7 in 8 inn.), Incarnate Word (3-2) and Louisiana Tech (9-3).
In the tournament for Samford,
Abbie Miranda collected six hits, including a double and a home run, and drove in eight runs. Miranda was named to the All-Tournament team for the event.
Madison Couch hit a team-high .533, with eight hits in the tournament.
Lexie Higgins homered twice, including a grand slam, and drove in five runs.
In the circle for Samford in the tournament, the staff posted a 3.43 ERA.
Taylor DeCelles earned the team's lone win of the weekend.
Jessica Stone had a team-best ERA of 1.56, while
Grey Adams recorded 13 strike outs in 14.0 innings of work.
Jacksonville enters the tournament with a mark of 3-2 so far this season. The Dolphins are coming off a 6-0 loss to top-ranked Florida on Wednesday.
Longwood is currently 0-4 on the young season. The Lancers are coming off a 5-0 setback to Ohio University on Sunday.
Troy has a record of 3-2 entering this weekend's action. The Trojans are coming off back-to-back wins against Bethune-Cookman (9-6) on Sunday and North Carolina State (5-3) on Saturday.
Samford has an all-time record of 3-0 against Jacksonville. The teams met in a three-game series in 2015, with Samford sweeping the games by scores of 10-2, 3-2 and 6-0.
Samford and Troy have met 58 previous times, with Troy holding a 40-18 lead in the series. The teams last met on April 13, 2016, with Samford earning an 8-6 win at Troy.
Samford and Longwood will be meeting for the first time ever in softball.
