SAMFORD VS. JACKSONVILLE BOX SCORE
TROY, Ala. – The Samford softball team split its two games on the first day of the Trojan Classic Friday at the Troy Softball Complex. The Bulldogs defeated Longwood, 8-5, and fell to Jacksonville, 7-0.
For Samford in the win over Longwood,
Shelby Maze had four hits, going 4-for-5 with a triple.
Kelsey Royalty went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.
Abby Sweeney also homered, going 1-for-4 with three RBI.
Abbie Miranda went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while
Madison Couch turned in a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
Grey Adams earned the win in the circle for Samford, improving her season record to 1-1. She tossed 7.0 innings, giving up five runs on six hits, and striking out five batters in picking up the victory.
For Longwood, Jessica Smith homered, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Jenna Carnes (0-1) took the loss in the circle, pitching 4.0 innings, giving up four runs on six hits.
Samford jumped on top early with three runs in the top of the first inning, with all three runs coming on a home run by Sweeney. Longwood answered with four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-3 lead.
The Bulldogs tied the game with a run in the top of the third inning, and then took a 5-4 lead with one run in the fourth inning. Longwood then tied the game at 5-5, plating a run in the bottom of the fourth.
Samford took the lead for good when
Hannah Trombley singled to drive in Maze in the sixth inning for a 6-5 Samford lead. The Bulldogs added the final two runs in the top of the seventh when Royalty belted a two-run homer to make the final score 8-5.
In the loss to Jacksonville, Samford was led by
Whitney Hinton, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Taylor DeCelles took the loss in the circle, dropping her record to 1-2. She pitched 5.0 innings, giving up seven runs, only two earned, on six hits.
Jacksonville was led by Kristen Griffith, driving in three runs in a 1-for-2 performance. Madison Ragan went 2-for-2 for the Dolphins. Taylor Thorpe pitched 6.0 scoreless innings to pick up the win and improve her record to 2-0.
Jacksonville scored four unearned runs in the top of the first inning, thanks to three Samford errors. The Dolphins then added a run in each of the second, fourth and fifth innings to run away with the 7-0 victory.
With the split. Samford's record moves to 2-5 on the young season. Tomorrow, the Bulldogs will take on Jacksonville at 12:30 p.m., and Troy at 5:30 p.m. Links to follow Samford's remaining games in the tournament are below.
