Softball Drops Two At Trojan Classic Saturday

TROY, Ala. –
The Samford softball team fell to Jacksonville, 9-8 in eight innings, and then the Bulldogs were defeated by Troy, 6-2 on day two of the Trojan Classic Saturday at the Troy Softball Complex.
 
In the Jacksonville game, Samford was led at the plate by Abbie Miranda, going 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI. Karsin Spinks went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Bulldogs.
 
Rebecca Leonard (0-1) pitched the final 2.0 innings, giving up two runs, just one earned, in taking the loss in the circle for Samford. Jessica Stone and Grey Adams also pitched in the game for Samford.
 
For Jacksonville, Kristen Griffith went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. Bethany Kursch also homered in the game for the Dolphins. Taylor Thorpe (3-0) pitched 7.0 innings, giving up four runs on nine hits to earn the win for Jacksonville.
 
Jacksonville jumped out to a big early lead with four runs in the first inning and three more in the third inning for a commanding 7-0 advantage. Griffith and Kursch hit a three-run home run each to help the Dolphins to the lead.
 
Samford began chipping away at the JU lead with a run in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 7-1. The Bulldogs then plated two runs in the sixth inning to make the score 7-3 heading into the final scheduled inning.
 
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, Miranda hit a bases-clearing triple to close to within one run at 7-6. Miranda then scored on a wild pitch to knot the score at 7-7 and force extra innings.
 
In the top of the eighth, Ciara Jones singled to drive in Makenzie Buss for an 8-7 Jacksonville lead. The Dolphins pushed their lead to 9-7 when Heather Roberts was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, Kelsey Royalty scored on an error to cut the lead to 9-8. Samford, however, could not push another run across and the game ended in a 9-8 setback.
 
In the Troy game, Shelby Maze went 3-for-4 at the plate. Abby Sweeney and Whitney Hinton drove in a run each for the Bulldogs. Grey Adams (1-2) pitched 2.0 innings, giving up four runs on three hits to take the loss.
 
For Troy, Kaylee Hussey went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Becca Hartley homered in the win for the Trojans. Rachel Rigney (4-1) pitched 3.2 innings, giving up no runs on two hits to earn the win for Troy.
 
Troy took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Samford then answered with a run in the top of the third inning to knot the score at 1-1.
 
Troy took the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the third inning, making the score 5-1. Samford cut the lead to 5-2 with a run in the top of the fourth inning, and Troy added a final run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the final score 6-2.
 
With the losses, Samford falls to 2-7 on the young season.
 
Samford will wrap up play in the Trojan Classic by taking on Longwood Sunday morning. The game is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start. Below are links to follow Sunday's game.
